For all the negatives of streaming services, there are a lot of great bands I'd never have heard of were it not for Spotify.

Black Moth were one of them.  A fantastic British band who made three excellent albums, before sadly splitting on 2019.  They're often described as stoner metal, but I think there's something a bit more modern and alternative about them.

The Open Skyz album, sadly, is as bland as could be, and Holland is kept in a box with the lid nailed down, only released for a couple of sub-Neal Schon melodic solos.  No fleet-fingered tapping or Floyd Rose elephant noises on this one...  It sounds like a Steve Perry solo album.  Hard to imagine who they thought was going to buy it in 1993. 

Edit:  I've just found out that they are now a Journey tribute band, featuring four original members of Valentine/Open Skyz, plus drummer Adam Augeri... who's the son of one-time Journey singer Steve Augeri.  Small world...  Hugo (Valenti) is an absolute doppelganger of Steve Perry:

@duotone it is indeed. There are probably multiple artists with the same or similar names, but look for a mostly black and white album cover with "Valentine" in red.

As a bit of an antidote to slagging off Hootenanny its nice to remember that there is an interesting archive of stuff created by Later. This is Fried who were a duo plus backing musicians, American soul singer Jonte Short plus David Steele (bassist in The Beat and The Fine Young Cannibals seen here doing something weird with a telecaster).

I've been listening to "Fairy-Doom" trio Faetooth.  Slow, crushingly heavy, they're not exactly poptastic but they're surprisingly melodic.

One of my favourite bands at the moment is Handsome Jack.

A couple of years ago they did a session with OurVinyl, and recently I've come across some really decent sounding bands via the OurVinyl YouTube channel.

So this week I 'ave been mostly listening to:

The Sheepdogs - it's possible I will need to buy their entire back catalogue, they sound awesome!  Why did I not know about these guys already?!

St. Paul and the Broken Bones - I was vaguely aware of these guys already but glad it focused my attention.  They're playing Bristol on Thursday and now I'm wondering if I can somehow get to the gig.

The California Honeydrops - again, much back catalogue investigation required.

Oh, and Handsome Jack, of course!  I already own everything they've ever done.
