Help me with OD changes

I have an EHX soul food which I’ve had for years. Generally I like it but I find with strat into my Blues Deluxe it tends to sound muddy, even with the tone up.
Can you recommend a good alternative cleanish/low-gain/transparent OD that’s less dull sounding?

  • The ThorpyFX Peacekeeper would be my recommendation. I've tried a number of low gain overdrives and that was my favourite.  The Wampler Tumnus Deluxe is another you might want to consider. Between the two, the Peacekeeper edged it for me.

I have found zendrive clone and a nobels odr1 to be great clean sounding drives.

If you don't like the klon style and don't want mid bump ts style pedal then something like the xotic rc or bbpedals would be good,  the timmy (or jan ray etc) would do what you want you want.

Personally I find all Klon-type pedals excessively brash/harsh in the upper mid/treble - although not actually “bright” - so if it sounds dull to you then you may need something *really* bright.

Tumnus is based off the same circuit as a soul food and so is the Golden Eagle/zombie clone. Avoid

    Here's a spectrum:
Soul Food etc, honky loud mids, neutral lows
Ts-9/sd-1 - smooth, bass cut, mid boost
Zendrive - similar to a ts but more sizzle on the top, slight mid boost
ODR-1 - smoothest, fat low end, flattish mids
Thorpy Gunshot - nice bit of everything
Timmy - neutral grit, low and high eq
Bluesbreaker - neutral but a bit raspy up top

That's what I was thinking. My golden horse is anything but dull and muddy.

Interesting. Not tried the Soul Food, so I wasn't aware of its similarity to the Tumnus Deluxe. I did find the TD offered quite a range of tones though and it never seemed muddy to me. The Peacekeeper can be very transparent and just boost what you've got if you want, but it covers a lot more. I experimented with it the other day to see if I could replicate a TS-type pedal - personally, I like a mid-humped pedal with Strats, although I use the Peacekeeper more with Teles. I found I could pretty much nail a TS sound if I wanted to. It's very versatile, like most Thorpy pedals. Re. the Gunshot, I own one and love it, but it wouldn't be my first choice with single coils. YMMV of course.

I've had most of the pedals mentioned above.
I'd highly recommend getting  a Barber gain changer as it is awesome, really easy to dial in and sounds great with everything.

  • Is it wrong that I actually prefer the sound of my soul food and Boss blues driver over my king of tone? Going through a blackstar soloist 60 though so a long way off a fender style
