Why is it when you break up a family argument (between my wife and autistic son) you are made to feel absolute shit.

I think I may know a bit of what you are going through.  I have a 13 year old autistic son who is built like a Sherman tank. 

You often don’t get thanks for what you do but you do it because you love them and they need you.

Because when people are that far into an argument, the shit sprays everywhere, due to the fact that nobody can back down. Player 3 entering the game just means another target.

Been there, done that. Never pleasant. It usually gets better half an hour later, when everybody's calmed down. Hope it does for you

My son is fine, and thanked me for the intervention, however I get the feeling I'll be on the sofa for a week.
Had to utter some truths to both of them.

You fool!  Any man worth his salt would have slipped out the back door, left it half an hour then come back after they'd finished pretending you know nothing at all about it and had just nipped out to the shops.
