Sky Arts 6/2/21.

Might be a bit specialist - an interest in the Birmingham post punk scene/ Stewart Lee/ obscure statues but looks fun to me.

I'd love to see that. Saw the Nightingales at the ATP festival that Stewart Lee curated, they were great. Last ATP ever I think.

    Got no Sky though :(

Looks great, I have a Nightingales LP, they were a pretty good band.

  • I thought it might be a bit relentlessly low budget and difficult to watch. It’s probably a bit long for what it is ( although I say that about almost every film) but it’s surprisingly entertaining stuff, often funny and studded with recognisable cameos. There’s even a brief scene inside a bar in Birmingham where I once played a gig.
Lee himself isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but he’s quite jolly in this and obviously enthusiastic about his subject.
    Well worth a watch.

It was decent watch - local interest and a band I knew nothing about. I agree on the length; it could have been edited down to something like 90 mins.

No, I didn’t really know anything about them although obviously quite significant at one point in time in terms of the West Mids punk/ post punk scene and regulars on the John Peel show.
It’s interesting to see something about relatively ordinary musicians, the struggle to make a living, what you do/ don’t compromise on, etc. I’m part way through Steve Lukather’s autobiography which is fine but it’s grows up in Hollywood, learns to play on the Gibson my dad gave me, hung around with sessions musicians, me and my school mates became session musicians...it’s hard to relate.

Anyway, here’s the full clip of the West Midlands least likely supergroup Fuzzbox, The Nightingales and Ted Chippington...

I watched it from the Brummie interest point of view. His early stuff really wasn’t my cup of tea at all, but an enjoyable watch all the same. I thought his latest band (the song at the end particularly) was more melodic and tight though. I thin’ I also recognised the garage that he used to sleep in at night, although it wasn’t called Bristol Street Motors then. Might have been Peter Boynton.

All in all, an interesting watch, full of characters. Nice to see King Kong again as well.

Just finished watching, held my attention throughout, throughly engaging. King Kong was a real surprise,a memory I didn’t even know was there but instant recognition. I had no idea of the back story but I vaguely recall seeing him from the roadside amongst the empty weekday stalls of Ingliston Sunday Market.

Finally caught this tonight on Sky Arts repeat.. I'm on Freeview so have had to wait for it. Very enjoyable and funny without devaluing Robert at all. Some lovely Midlands turns of phrase also that made Mrs Mudslide and I do proper lols.

Watched it first time around. Loved it. I have strong childhood memories of the King Kong statue, so the explanation of the history of of the statue was fabulous. Loved the doc, have a few Nightingales LP’s, so a fan anyway.

They live-streamed a gig, with warm up by Stuart Lee a few months ago.  Loved that too!
