After a few teaser videos, Earthquaker Devices have released the Astral Destiny  - a new reverb that allows you to change the pitch of the reverb tails

I'm not sure it's something I would go for but I didn't see any other posts about it on here but thought it might be of interest.

Man that ‘Astral’ mode sounds fucking awesome. Depending on the price I think my Walrus Audio SLO has some serious competition.

EDIT: On further watch, unlike my SLO it seems like it can’t do a standard reverb sound which is a pity.

Looks great, US price is $199 so cheaper than some options.
Some folks like water, some folks like wine.
    My feedback thread is here.

I think it can do standard reverb. Here's a list of the modes copied from the youtube video description:

    1. Abyss: Huge reverb with no octave effect
    2. Shimmer: Adds an upper octave to the reverb tail
    3. Sub: Adds a lower octave to the reverb tail
    4. Sub Shimmer: Adds an upper and lower octave to the reverb tail
    5. Astral: Adds an upper and lower octave combined with a regenerating tail
    6. Ascend: Upward pitch bending
    7. Descend: Downward pitch bending
    8. Cosmos: Adds a regenerating fifth to the reverb tail

I think Abyss mode will be a more standard reverb mode but in the Earthquaker demo vid they are messing around with it using the expression pedal and modulation etc so you don't really get to hear it as a standard reverb.

I just saw this video where the guy doing the demo does use it as a standard reverb for a bit before trying out the other modes:

Some fantastic sounds in there, sounds far more interesting and creatively inspiring than the Walrus Mako....but mono?  Is this 1995?

  • It's a very different pedal to the Walrus R1. It will do standard reverb in Abyss mode if you turn the modulation depth to zero, but other than that it's all full-on shimmery stuff.

Stereo would have been nice... but to be fair it is much cheaper than the R1 (£205 vs £319 RRP).

It is cheap by boutique ‘verb standards.  The combo of in-depth shimmer options and mono signal lead it more into special effect territory than an end of chain functional reverb, in that context I think it could be very creatively useful.

Yeah, maybe not useful to that many people... but EQD have such a wide range a pedals now they're clearly happy to fill niches.

I think the right people use their pedals for the right things. I'm always using my Arpanoid

Its fair to say that EQD don't make many "normal" pedals - they make pedals that are all about the musical extremes. If you want a standard reverb, I'd argue you can get a cheap fear eastern mini pedal that will do that for less than the price of round of drinks - so if its important to you to have that option, I'd suggest thats the way forwards.

Stereo - how many people actually use two guitar amps all the time? Do you actually play with other people? Apart from you, when you play live who *actually* experiences the stereo spread?
And from a recording perspective having a separate stereo reverb for your guitar player thats as nuts as this is going clutter a mix very quickly. Want to make it ping pong around like a lune in a recorded mix... free plug ins are your friend and will inhabit much less audio 'space'.

I'm sure they'll sell loads of them...

Oooh yeah the ‘Abyss’ setting is just a standard plate reverb by the sounds of things. That could be a deal breaker. Couldn’t give a toss about lack of stereo tbh.

  • Anyone know when they're due in stock in the UK?

Surprised the lack of a reverse mode, sounds nice though

I think BreaktheMachine said they were due imminently. Check with him on Instagram, he's pretty helpful

  • Think this will be a lovely reverb for synths  pairing  well with my Grandmother.

Tone knob is always useful and give a lot of flexibility on my Dark world and will be interesting to see how that effects thing and tames those high octaves a bit. Interested to see how slow that stretch/pitch ramp can go as well.

Jamie has hinted at a fair few  releases this year  which  will be nice to see as I have a real soft spot for Earthquaker.

Has anyone tried one of these?  (@Che, @JohnathanThomas83?)  I'm considering getting one and would love to hear your thoughts.

I'd mainly use it as a "special effect", rather than as a standard reverb.  The stretch button seems to be capable of some interesting things.  Along with the demo above, I enjoyed this one:

I think that's the key to enjoying this pedal. It's great for epicness.
