Raunchy scenes in regular films....why?

What's Hot
Scanning the BBC News page over lunch and this story popped up.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-55795237

Seems like a fairly sensible stance from Keira.
What I don't understand, and have mentioned this to friends previously, is why do so many films have raunchy sex scenes when they aren't really needed to support the story? I wonder if this is something which actors want to get on their CV, or indeed Directors, so they are available for a broader range of films in future. It just strikes me as weird.

I see what you mean, but what really grinds my gears is when the plot gets in the way of the raunchy scenes.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

It is odd - also the use of profanity for no reason which bumps up the film rating.

I'm no prude, I like a swear or a bit of porn, but it seems completely pointless to reduce the audience of a film for one or two bits of cussing or non-plot tits.

I completely support Keira's stand here. All too often - especially in action movies in 80s and 90s there would be completely pointless bits of sex or nudity.

Wish they'd generally focus on plot a bit more than gratuitous nudity or swearing - which have their place ok, but not the MAIN plot device.

Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Yep agreed - there's loads of good films I can't watch with my 15 year old daughter.

I agree to an extent, but IMO there's also far too much "woman inexplicably carries sheet around the room so she can hide her body from the guy who has just licked her arsehole". :)

There was a period of trying to up classifications so films would be seen as more adult/ scarey/ violent/ gritty than they actually were. Although these days it’s more likely to be the opposite and they want them to have as wide an appeal as possible. I think it also goes back to the tits and teeth/ something for the dads approach to making entertainment.

Watching The Great in Channel 4 which has it’s female star also as an executive producer it’s interesting as it is full of sexual references and pretty raunchy but little or none of that is about the ‘male gaze’ - ogling the pretty women.

    I totally agree.

I've seen a few films recently which have been thoroughly enjoyable and when I analyse it there's almost always no gratuitous sex.  It's such an outdated device, might have been of interest to some of us 50 years ago when the occasional glimpse of a woman's bare torso was the height of excitement, but not today.

Both sex and swearing are part of everyday life, so if a film is going for some realism gritty or otherwise, then these can be included, as long as it is all realistic, nothing in the extreme and nothing based for the male gaze whatever that means. Both actors need to be fine with it too.

On the other hand if the film is escapism, action, superheroes bollocks then sex really shouldn’t be part of that.

Reading the article, I didn’t quite get what Keira was getting at, or rather there seemed to be a disjoint between the headline and the article. It seemed to me she was saying she was happy to star in a film with sex scenes as long as it wasn’t her doing them (fair enough body doubles etc) and it was properly part of the story. And that she wouldn’t do a film from a female perspective if it was directed by a man, which again is perfectly understandable, if a film is about a woman and her life then really it probably should be directed by a woman, who would understand the characters experiences.

Because it’s an easy way of bumping up audience numbers.  And it’s not just naked girls either.

I’m reminded of a story from the making of Top Gun.  The US Navy cooperated extensively with the film makers, and provided a dedicated technical advisor.  On viewing the locker room scene confrontation between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, he pointed out that the Navy doesn’t have communal locker rooms and this wouldn’t happen in real life.

The film makers told him “We’re paying Tom Cruise $1 million for this movie.  We gotta see some flesh”.

watch the movie '365 days' - movie has no purpose other than the raunchy scenes - Whole movie is nothing but raunchy - How they got away with it is surprising - Crap movie as a story line but the polish actress has many fine attributes

Wait what... Of everything in Top Gun, the US Navy said the bit that was technically unrealistic was the locker room layout? :anguished:

I think we've managed to watch about 2/3rds of that, in two sittings. It's a pretty poor film, and we didn't even think there was much raunchiness to it. A female Polish friend told us it was really steamy and worth watching....we disagree.

Sex scenes are a way of filling time. A couple of fumbles and that's less dialogue needed. As for swearing, it's gritty realism, isn't it?

Both things were seen as part of the liberation and revolution of the sixties and seventies, post-Lady Chatterly and all of that. Not having them in your film suggested you were part of the fuddy-duddy old school.

Good fellas would have been a good hour shorter without the word "fuck", and would it have affected the film that much?

Sex scenes are a way of making up for a crap plot, the viewer is too busy concentrating on who has their baps out to notice that the story is rubbish.  Same with bad language, if there's an overuse of the f-word it's usually because there isn't enough dialogue without it.

I watched 21 Bridges a few months back, I reckon the film would have been a good 30 minutes shorter had they cut the use of the f-word by half.
