  • I guess this is when Leo Sayer played bass for them... before Adam Clayton joined the band?

  • Randomly brought to mind Flintlock, I’m just about old enough to remember them on kid’s tv show Pauline’s Quirkes.

    Ahh yes he was. The line up that got in the charts also included Sarah Pascoe’s father, I’m not sure he was there in the Pauline’s Quirkes days.
    I bet U2 which they had a claim to fame like that.

    It's funny how Flintlock are still amazing and have actually improved beyond belief and that U2 are still shit.

    Larry Mullen looks like he should be in Hanson :).

    On a purely geeky level, I'd like to know if Edge was using some sort of distortion box sitting on top of the amp - it doesn't really sound like an overdriven AC30, and even if it was he would have to have it cranked to very un-TV-studio levels to get that much gain.

    Although I'm not completely sure if it's actually live, or mimed - some of what Adam Clayton is doing doesn't appear to correspond to what you hear. (Although that may just be him!)

    "Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

    "Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

    It's mimed for sure, and there's every chance it's not an ac30 we're hearing (or, "the" AC30) - at that age and that stage of a career, you go into a studio to record a demo and probably use whatever the engineer tells you to plug into.

    I do think it's cool that they go from that to this in 3 years;

    And 3 years after that, they're doing something like "The Unforgettable Fire". They definitely divide opinions, but there's no doubt that they pushed themselves artistically. Easy to forget that now.

    is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

    I think Clayton looks like he's trying to be Lou Reed.

    I was quite enjoying the performance actually, until Bono comes on and gives it the full Madison Square Garden routine for the last 30 seconds.

  • What a transformation in that short space and time. I really enjoy U2 up to (and including) the Pop album.

    The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are personal favourites.

    I've never really been a U2 fan, but I do like those first few albums, when all their songs sounded kind of the same (but in a good way).  My brother had Under a Blood Red Sky and played it constantly, and although I'd tell him to turn it off it is actually really good.

    They certainly put the graft in early on and toured relentlessly. To go from Boy - War - Unf Fire - Joshua Tree - Achtung Baby is just mind blowing. If they would have stopped there they would probably be held in much higher regard more widely. I've been a fan since the early eighties when they were seen as a bit of a cult band.
