HELP!

I need to turn a bedroom into a recording studio. What do I need?

I have:
throat
guitar
keyboard
mics etc
audio interface
PC
audacity

I don't have:
sound damping stuff
sound proofing stuff (to stop other house noise leaking in)
monitors
pop shield
closed-back headphones
better mic & cradle
probably lots of other expensive stuff

Can someone please guide me through what I need to get?

    Sound Damping: GIK Acoustics
Sound Proofing: Forget it- it isn't possible without building a room within a room + HVAC etc.
    Monitors: Budget?
    Popshield: Amazon.
    Closed Back Headphones: Beyer DT770
Mic and cable: Rabbit hole- what do you want it for?

Personally I'd say 'forget it' to pop shields. Better just to put the mic somewhere it doesn't pick up air blasts.

Absolutely.  In fact, never use the term ‘proofing’.  You are talking about sound ‘attenuation’ and there will be a number associated with it (in dB).  If you don’t know how much attenuation you need then you are not in a position to start specifying a solution.

For acoustic treatment (reducing the influence of the room on the monitored sound) then you will get the best results / £ by going down the DIY route (Rockwool broadband absorption).  The problem is that the smaller the room the greater the need for treatment but then there is no space to install it.

  • What are you trying to do? Track demo's, record acousyic or mic'd up instruments? Mix? All of the above? To what level?

Purpose mad sound absorption can be expensive.....make your own if on a budget.

I've got some surplus GIK traps that I could sell fairly cheap.
    PM me if interested.

Have you tried recording with what you’ve got? Then see what you really need.
You might be surprised what you can do without.

Thank you chaps - and Octa I’ll give you a call tomoz or wed, thanks! She’s been recording with a certain setup but the recordings sound a bit sort-of home-made.

  • I did this at home in a not particularly nice sounding room:

I got our old keyboard player to record the piano and send it over to me. I tracked the vocals, and added the guitar (at 01:30, in one take - should redo it, really), then did the mix.

I used an AKG C 414 B-ULS into an SSL+ interface into Logic.

So, you should be able to fee a good sound at home.
