Any idea what's going on with the right hand here?

Nic Jones was quite an unusual guitarist. He played fingerstyle using fingertips rather than nails. He used some odd tunings and had an amazing sense of timing. But on some tunes he also used an interesting right-hand technique that has quite a distinctive sound, and I'm not quite sure how he did it.

These are the best two examples I can find. It's like some sort of odd hybrid between strumming and fingerstyle where he's using either his first finger or the thumbpick to pick out notes whilst holding down a rhythm at the same time.

Sounds like there's some claw hammer technique going on there.

Yes and no. It does sound like he's using down strokes with his first finger in clawhammer style, but there's more to it than that, and I don't hear the thumb doing the clawhammer thing at all. If you listen to The Humpback Whale he also seems to be rhythmically tapping the guitar body at the same time. Maybe he just had more hands than most people.
