  • I just feel old. I didn't read it and think "oh, he means like two Brazilian women on your knee. What a tool". I just thought of Brazilian Rosewood, followed by - "What a waste of wood", followed by "I just don't get rosewood necks".

Bliss in my naivety I guess.....

I didn’t assign the inanimate object a gender nor did I infer one from the comments.

I reckon, if people continue to become increasingly thin skinned, humourless and desperate to be a victim of some one else's '-ism' at the current rate, we'll have to give up using words within the next 10 or 20 years. Things will quieten down then.
It's worryingly pathetic, more and more people are becoming completely obsessed with political correctness. It must be to the point where a lot of people are viewing internet posts, watching tv shows/films, listening to songs etc. and the first thing on their mind is "is this politically correct?".

I don't even think more people are actually feeling genuine offence more often, it's that more people want to make it part of their identity that they're the type of person to point out lapses in political correctness.

Even competition to come up with complicated ways something is cryptically offensive before anyone else noticed it was problematic.
I think dismissing critical points as thin skin, victimisation, pathetic and putting all under a guise of political correctness exacerbates the problem and risks further antagonising the discourse.  I don't think the opposition to what Fender posted (and rightly removed) is extended to every possible forum, but I understand why some feel so attacked.

I'm not a Brazilian woman, so the implied objectification by a major corporation on a high audience channel does not make me feel a 'step out of the room' sensation, but I do see it as tone-deaf, understand, respect and empathise with the sentiment.

There is place for humour, even dated and potentially contentious humour, but an international marketing channel of a corporate leader is not it. What does it communicate to the young followers, boys and girls?

I get that Fender didn't put a 'A pair of Brazilian women' in the post, but it's not out of order to accept that that's what was implied. To defend otherwise is like saying that 'trial by combat' and 'show strength' don't actually mean 'invade the capitol'. I get it, it's not, defense of the pedants. It's just that certain things stir up real sentiments in people, and I think that's why some kind of language is called dogwhistling, some hear it, some don't.

This forum gets a mention here in relation to social media posts by John Cruz:

    https://guitar.com/news/industry-news/fender-custom-shop-master-builder-john-cruz/

    When did this happen?
Last June. Cruz posted a photo of a truck with the what looked like blood on it, with a caption saying something like “he didn’t see any protestors on his drive this morning”. This was at the height of the BLM/George Floyd murder protests.

(Orignal thread here. The offensive photo is a dead link now)

Very clumsy by Fender and a bit creepy.

They are right to pull it and right to apologise.

  • Weird. Creepy. Unnecessary. Out of touch.

Fitting for a company peddling instruments designed in the 50s and 60s.

Also, how are they Brazilians? Was it the fingerboard? Because Fender don't have a Brazil factory. This just reeks of some sweaty bloke getting a bit excited at an innuendo.

Offensive? Not really. But it is crass and stupid and Fender need to be better. Tone deaf - how appropriate for a company that sells the Blues Junior :)

Yes it all seems a bit juvenile doesn't it.

They do actually seem to have Brazilian rosewood necks mind you (so it wasn't totally random) - Fender may have deleted their post, but as it was a repost the original is still there on the Custom Shop Instagram.

    Reminds me of this joke:

Jim Mattis gave the president his daily briefing. He concluded by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" Donald Trump exclaimed. "That's terrible!"

His staff sat stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watched as the President sat, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asked, "How many is a brazillion?"

Offended or not, I really don’t know how they thought writing the advert from the perspective of a weird creepy uncle that you don’t feel comfortable leaving the kids with would be a good idea.

    It’s not great.

It’s weird. Sex sells and although the whole stereotypical tradesman wolf whistling at a passing female makes me want to vomit (like you have a chance you knuckle dragging oaf), some women will absolutely find this agreeable. I know several women that crave this sort of attention. You see it on social media all the time.
It’s very easy to read between the lines when people present information in the social domain.

The “great workout” post. Breasts nearly popping out of the sports bra, make up done, pouting, filtered to buggery and back. The thinly veiled “I’ve just split with my boyfriend” post - essentially an open invitation for people to slide into their DMs.
A lot of women (and men) actively subliminally encourage this sort of behaviour. Maybe because it’s exciting. Maybe because they’re lonely. Maybe they can’t bear the thought of being on their own. Maybe they need a “man” (or woman).

We are trying to unravel several million years of evolution with new standards, rules, levels of correctness etc.

The fundamental base activity of reproduction, male dominance and female submission, or male = provider, female = bearer of offspring is so deeply engrained in our DNA that of course it’s going to go wrong from time to time.

We are being asked to adjust at a far greater pace than we evolved to get to this point to begin with.

There’ll always be the people that are offended. There’ll always be the me too brigade and then on the other side there’ll be the encouragement from the opposite sex, the parading about, the flirting, the porn, the no getting away from the fact we are hardwired to basically procreate and people wonder why anxiety goes through the roof in today’s society.

We are trying to conform to standards that our evolution and DNA and our genetic make up simply do not know how to make allowances for yet.

I’m not sure what my point is anymore.

Can people be more considerate? Absolutely. But we’re kind of relying on the basic lowest common denominators that gorge on soap operas and Saturday night TV, whose only want in life is to get pissed with their shitty mates in their shitty local and ogle and gesture towards the barmaids and unsuspecting punters that happen to be fresh meat to actually have a brain that isn’t firmly rooted in their genitalia. That feels like a big ask.

We’re always going to have idiots.
