New amp kit day

What's Hot

Greetings folks,
Having thoroughly enjoyed building a JTM Black Flag kit from Modulus Amps, I have taken delivery of the next one. Not a million miles away tonaly, but hopefully more reminiscent of higher gain tones found in certain 80's rock.
This is Modulus's take on the Appetite for Destruction modded Marshall, and features 6550 valves.
Because i like naming things differently, this is the Super Magic Lobster MkII, and my little boy Isaac will be helping me sort the components and build it :)

It’s going to take you more than a couple of evenings to wire up six thousand valves - when will you find time to play it?

This will be quite different to the black flag amp!

I still havent managed to get my one back from Chris who did the demo.

Nice! I saw this when looking at the Modulus kits a while ago.

I’d be tempted to try the MOD800 kit (or more likely get Michael to build it for me!).

How did you get on with the black flag kit?

The kit is excellent, and the sound is phenomenal - even at low volume (which, despite the addition of a MV doesn't really exist) the cleans are 'lush'. Takes pedals very well up front, and the crunch tones are exactly what you have in your head - open A never sounded so glorious :)
I added a MV and variable NFB control which complicated tge wiring/lead dress considerably.
I have to add that Michaels assistance was both freely given, extensive, and very patient.
As a first project, i have learned a lot, and ended up with something im very proud of.

I'll post up a full build thread when ive sorted through all the photo's and recorded something.

    Cheers

Looks like there's a lot of enjoyment to be had in building the Modulus kit.

It would be great to see and hear how you a progressing with the build if you can find the time to take photographs and post them.

There certainly is a huge amount of satisfaction and enjoyment, and sheer terror the first time it's wired up to mains AC. Its very sobering to measure 400+ volts on an otherwise innocuous circuit.

I'll undoubtedly be posting the new build's progress :)
