I know there are rubbish cabs and good cabs but I cannot see how nearly a bag can be justified for a  by 12!

Yes on both counts. I run my Dr. Z EZG-50 and Vox Night Train with it.

I have a Montage Intro 1x12 with a Fane A60 and love it. It's a fine sounding cab and has the convertible back panel.

Zilla do a good range of 1x12 options too plus you can customise finish etc ...  and you may see them on tFB occasionally.

 btw - I have a Montage 1x12 with matching slideover flightcase sleeve - cant recommend it as I havent heard it for 12 mths as its in studio storage :-(   - from what I do recall though  it works best with an open back ..
