I saw Opeth supporting Dream Theater they're worth a listen.
Kamelot are next on my list to check out.
If you haven't listened to Mars Volta, then do!
    I nearly suggested Mars Volta

Deloused in the Comatorium is one of my all time favourites.

Quite crazy noisy compared to dream theatre though.

Deloused is a great album! I never got into their other albums as much, although that song with Frusciante doing a solo is good (L'Via something?).

The drummer in this band is Mike Portnoy's son and the singer is a lunatic

    Porcupine Tree?

I never got deep into the DT catalogue but images & words is a fantastic album. Train of thought also. I should really check out the others.

    Steven Wilson in general.

The Raven That Refused to Sing is excellent. Is even got GG for a bit of high octane widdling if you are missing JP.

Yes +1 for Periphery, incredible band and musicians. I'm not really into the earlier stuff so much, but III and IV are awesome. Spencer's vocals are much improved from the earlier stuff, some really brilliant performances on IV especially.

It’s hard to make suggestions really as DT have their own sound, but I’ll second the PT and Steven Wilson suggestions.

Maybe King crimson if you’re feeling particularly adventurous?

Maybe a bit more poppy at times but they can certainly pull the technique thing out of the bag when it's needed -
    Big Wreck
They also make the best use of 3 guitarists in a band with wonderfully arranged and different parts that don't clash

Yep - don't buy them if you want to relax your brain!

Yeah I rather like Kamelot. Cool singer. My fave album is called the Black halo. They are different to Dream Theater though, less intense soloing.
Sure - in the general area of interesting bands who do real textures, with some metal stuff and can be tuneful too.

I wanted not to like that Kamelot but I bloody loved it!

Karnivool could be worth a listen too.

This thread reminded me of a band I used to listen to a bit called Pagans Mind. Super cheesy but this track definitely has Dream Theater vibes!

    Riverside.

Opeth from Heritage onwards. Or even their earlier stuff if you don’t mind the death vocals.

+1 for Haken - massively influenced by Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy borrowed them to play a load of DT stuff for a tour a couple of years ago.

    Spock's Beard

    Frost*

    Redemption

Spock's Beard and Frost* are a bit less metal than DT, but Redemption are pretty similar.
