Well I know Korina to be a great wood to make guitars from.. And I thought that flamed Korina was pretty unusual.. Dont think I have ever seen any before. If it were more like £80 I would have probably bought it.

It does have flame sometimes, and it's usually that even subtle ripple that one has.

    Should look lovely once finished

It's those unsightly brown stains that put me off.

This one's nicer IMO but it looks to be badly cupped.

About 15 years ago at the Dallas Guitar Show a guy I know bought a fresh from the factory two-piece korina body Historic Flying V for $6,500.  I'm sort of surprised you can get korina for 100ish quid!

You shouldn't be paying more than £60+VAT for a white Korine body blank, unless you're buying off eBay so-called Tonewood suppliers charging for well over £100 for a load of crap.

You always have been able to get it cheaper than that unless it was from some prized stock like old growth Honduran mahogany or something.. Even then.. Your mate was fully and truly ripped off.. You would expect to get a couple of trees worth for that money.

I made this from Black Korina.. The wood for the body cost me about £65

I like the look of that.
Something I noticed there, that I've never really thought about before is that it has the grain horizontal compared to the body, while almost all guitars I have seen where the grain is visible it is more or less vertical compared to the body - any idea why this is?

I don't want to be controversial but that isn't black Korina, that is diseased White Korina which is beautiful and I use it a lot myself. Although I do think a lot of wood suppliers class it as black Korina so they can charge even more for it. I don't even know if there is such a thing as real black Korina, I stand to be corrected.

The photo below is the so-called black Korina, but in fact it come off of the 8 in.² block of white Korina, were half the block was very dark and the other half was pale yellow.

Same with the two-piece bodies below, each half was sliced off of the 8 in.² block to achieve a very dark body the other half of the block was pale yellow.

Well when I have looked black Korina up it comes up as the same as normal Korina..  I think they just call it black when its spalted like that...  This was the original block

Yeah, the tree that gives black korina, terminilia superba, also give white limba/korina.  Colour just varies from straw to a greenish colour in the pale bits.   The orange steaks you get are always accompanied by a bug hole, the tree reacts to the attack.  I assume the black.colour is a similar reaction to certain  minerals in the soil.  Some trees will be all pale wood, some will have colour variation.

Idigbo, Terminilia ivorensis,  doesn't usually get black streaks like that..... but could probably be found if it was spalted

A photo of the next piece of Korina I'm going to use.

The cap that's going to go on it.

    @GSPBasses - I'm not sure whether that's a body that  needs a cap!

Both stunning pieces of timber though.  Have you been rummaging around in DD's private stock stash again?

Blimey, I had to read that again at first glance I thought you said rummaging around DD's privates

I've had the Maple cap for over 10 years waiting for the customer to make up his mind what he wants to do with it, I've had to Korina and several pieces very similar in stock for about 3 years. It was too thick for LP CAP so I managed to slice a 5mm cap from the original. Yes I always look through Davids stock when I'm out there.

This is the 5mm cap, not sure what's going to be done with it yet, maybe an LPJ single cut or TC "F" hole
