Any idea what the bassist in the winning entry was playing?

Looked a bit like a Hondo but surely it couldn't be...

Danelectro Longhorn - but the sound you were hearing wasn't one.

Cheers. I did think it looked like a Danelectro but also spotted a Hondo same shape last night.

    So they weren't playing live?

    History of the rules.

Basically - the current rules state that only the main vocal has to be live.
Everything else, even the backing vocals, can be on a tape.

It used to be all live, then mining was allowed as long as all instruments were on stage even for the mimed parts, then it got more and more limited.

Now it's just the main vocal that is compulsory.

Gary Tallent from the E Street Band is the player I associate with the Dani. I have a vague memory that John Entwistle used one for a while as well.
And a vague memory of a Hondo copy.

If you go back a few years there was a pit orchestra that played the live music even if there were instruments on stage. There were certainly competition versions of the songs that varied from the version on record because they had to be rearranged for the orchestra ( often taking out electronic instruments).

I'd really like a return to 90% live instruments.

Perhaps with orchestras on tape purely from a set swapping perspective.

I think Roger Glover used a Hondo copy in the studio with Rainbow, around the time of Difficult to Cure and/or Straight Between the Eyes.

I always thought the most famous recorded example is My Generation.

There was a Hondo copy, yes.

At around the time of the Disraeli Gears sessions, Jack Bruce was photographed in the studio with a Dano Longhorn four string bass guitar.

Nobody seems to be able to definitively identify any recordings on which the instrument appears.

Longhorn owners confess themselves unable to extract a "Jack Bruce" sound from the instrument.
    Be seeing you.

Few years back I had a go at country rock, not my normal genre. Band leader insisted we record four songs, one instrument at a time (I much prefer live recording) which cost us £400, then I had to travel over 100 miles to Dundee to get up on stage on the Janey Kirk Show on Sky tv, and pay another £100 to mime to these songs! I walked before the next lot of recordings. But not before driving all the way down to Kelso in the Borders to play for nothing at some big country and western festival. First time in over fifty years I have had to pay to play in a band!
