Slight tangent from @EricTheWeary’s post in the one hit wonders thread, reminding us of the oeuvre of Smiley Culture.

I’ll start with Sweet Home Alabama, and its direct reference to Neil Young’s ‘Southern Man’.

Must be loads more out there?

'How do you sleep?' (John Lennon).  Aimed at McCartney and including the lines "So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise", "The only thing you done was yesterday" and "Since you've gone you're just another day".

The Gaslight Anthem did loads, one track in particular "High Lonesome" has direct quotes from Counting Crows and Bruce Springsteen and references Tom Petty.

They also reference other Springsteen tracks in "Meet Me by The Rivers Edge"

There's a Tom Waits reference somewhere in their catalogue but can't recall which....basically they loved dropping in these little lines.

I always felt the first line was alluding to Morrissey's Everyday is like Sunday as well. Not to mention the verse chords to it are basically Wonderwall with a different strumming rhythm

A couple more that spring to mind. Arthur Conley's 'Sweet Soul Music' name-checks a bunch of other acts and their songs (and the intro is lifted from the theme from 'The Magnificent Seven').
And in 'That's Why I'm Here', James Taylor sings about people "Paying good money to hear 'Fire And Rain' again and again and again".

I'm sure there's a James Taylor song that says something about singing fire and rain over and over again?
