I concur with most of what Sir William writes. 

Computer music software makes it extremely easy to generate music Projects with fabulous sounds but little or no worthwhile content.

There much to be said for the old-fashioned crude home demo recording format of vocal melody, sketched over guitar or piano chordal accompaniment. Take this to the rehearsal room or recording studio. Allow bandmates or hired triple scale session musicians to weave their magic.

In the case of Miles Davis, you wander around the live sound room, mumbling indecipherable instructions to each band member, whilst the recording is in progress.
