I just read that. Died of brain cancer, far too young.

One of the big names from when I watched football as a youth ( which outside of seeing a match live was MOTD and the FA Cup final) and when Ipswich were themselves a big name in the game.
    Sad news.

He played in the first game I went to live playing for Pompey against Norwich.

    What a good player.

I remember him from before I was interested in football, I thought that he looked cool and had a great name. RIP Paul

That was a great Ipswich side he played in - John Wark, Eric Gates, Mick Mills...

    RIP, and gone too soon.

You're not kidding. What a player Eric Gates was. Don't forget Terry Butcher.

Absolutely. They were a cracking team who played goid football with Mariner leading the line

I remember him mostly because of his name and his haircut, I wasn't really into football in those days, but sad to hear he's died, and so relatively young.

I found this quote from Terry Butcher which is interesting from a personal point of view:

“As well as being one of the very best I played with, Paul was the one who introduced me to heavy metal music,” said Butcher.

“Whenever one of the quality acts was in town, he would get tickets and arrange backstage passes for us to meet the stars.

“He was a big fan of Iron Maiden, Deep Purple and bands like that. He was the life and soul of the party and he knew his stuff. But what a player, what a fantastic team-mate to have on your side.”

    You makeweights!
I saw him at Argyle, before he was sold to The Tractorboys!
Can't remember who his last match was against, but Argyle were in with shout of promotion & there were 36,000 in Home Park.
He was too good for Plymuff. And died far too young

I saw him play for Ipswich at Carrow Road back in the day.  Despite playing for The Enemy, he was a classy player and most NCFC fans would probably have grudgingly agreed with that assessment.  RIP.

I didn't know about this. What a shame. There were a lot of good forward players around that time, and Mariner was one of the best.
