Finish for maple neck and fretboard?

What's Hot
My new Guitar Build maple neck and fretboard has arrived - really very happy with the quality. Ultra smooth finish.
I'd like to apply an oil to protect and seal the neck and fretboard.
I don't mind a gloss type finish on the fret board but I do want a smooth, natural, at most satin finish to the back of the neck.

Tru oil seems like the obviouse choice, id like to check that it will dry with a non sticky satin finish to maintain the smooth feeling of raw sanded wood neck? Will I need to rub it back with steel wool?

Are there any other finishes that are easy for a novice to apply please?

Oh yes, I want to keep it light, not looking for a darker / aged finish.

Cheers

Tru oil will darken but not too much, Danish oil even less. Both will give a suitable satin finish. You don't need to rub back with steel wool when the last coat is on, only gently between coats and more in the overly built up areas where it looks more opaque. You can then apply wax on top, I've used the bitchwood casey gunstock wax but there are local products others will have used with success no doubt.
