The Revenant. Lots of beards, trees and hard to understand American accents. Not a bad film by any means but a little bit tedious.
    5/10.

Salt.  As usual I'm about six years behind the rest of the world.  Strange film, it seemed like a silly, glossy, bloodless Mission Impossible style romp for the first half, then it got quite violent and a bit unpleasant in the second half.  Not bad though.  The Blu-ray has three different cuts of the film so they obviously weren't sure quite how to play it.

  • Watched ' The Greasy strangler' lastnight, and well......i wasnt quite prepared for a film as bizarre as that!!

It is a very strangely dark, black comedy horror.
Meda me piss my pants with laughter at some of the scenes, and purposely over-long awkward pauses in dialogue.

Really enjoyable, and would definitely recommend it to anyone with a certain type of dark humour.

    8.5/10

    A Man Called Ove (2016).

Moving and beautifully produced. I latched onto this after noticing that the book is at number 2 in the New York Times best selling fiction list.

But why did I watch the movie before reading the book?
    I don't know.  :s

    The Tower (2016)

Stunning documentary on the 1966 shootings at the University of Texas at Austin. The film uses a combination of animation and archive news footage to tell the story.
TBH....the 2 movies I have just posted have blown away (IMO) the other films I have seen recently.....and those other films were among the main 2017 Oscar contenders.

Manchester by the Sea, excellent for a movie that is very slow paced and existential, had me choked up in a few scenes, Casey Affleck is brilliant and believable, Michelle Williams I felt sort of drifted in and out of the story but she really nailed one pivotal scene that had my bottom lip going.

  • Passengers
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt in space. OK acting, they go well together. Story is a bit weak but I can forgive that because Chris Pratt is likeable, Jennifer Lawrence is lovely, I like space and Martin Sheen was good as well.
    Overall, watchable but nothing special.
    Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow.....

  • Watched Trainspotting 2 and Lego Batman.

Trainspotting 2 I thought was excellent.  Lego Batman was not as funny as the Lego Movie, though it was enjoyable enough.

  • Been to the flicks a few times so far this year. None of them a dud...

A United Kingdom - decent and engaging. Didn't know the story beforehand.

Arrival - great film about language and ideas. Amy Adams is superb in this. Bittersweet at the end when you untangle things.

Paterson - a warm, absorbing film where nothing much happens yet everything does. Really good, with really bad poetry.

Manchester By The Sea - surely the performance of the year by Casey Affleck. Raw, sad and powerful. Still crashing around my brain 3 weeks later.

La La Land - loved it whilst I was in the cinema, haven't thought about it at all since. Escapist and enjoyable.

T2:  Trainspotting - decent sequel and enjoyable to watch.

Denial - well acted and well written Timothy Spall is great as David Irving, but Tom Wilkinson's barrister did it for me.

I had a cold this week, so caught up on some things I'd recorded.

Megamind: Awful. Didn't bother finishing it. I assume it redeemed itself someway through so a generous 0.8 out of 7.1

Death Race 2: Weak start, picks up a bit as it goes on, turns out it's a prequel. A couple of amusing references. Not a patch on Death Race, which should tell you a lot. 5.1 out of 9.3

  • John Wick: Chapter Two    9/10

If you liked the first one, don't worry, this delivers too.  It is a roaring rampage of revenge and retribution that will please anyone who is partial to a rollercoaster ride of action and adventure.

@Clarky , this is for you.

Woah @Sporky , check yourself before you wreck yourself!  This thread is titled "

What films have you watched recently?"

    Not

What films have you started to watch recently but never bothered getting to the end of?

Please let us restore some integrity to this thread.

    Fair point; my apologies.

I watched all of Death Race 2 though. That's a pretty epic effort.
