Quite shocked to hear this, although thinking about it, it does seem like some time since I've seen him on TV.  There are a great many comedians around nowadays, but if you asked me who's the funniest he'd have been one of the very first names which sprang to mind.

The QI episode where they were discussing the worst song of all time, and he came out with ‘Free Myra Hindley’ was pure genius. One of the funniest men out there. He will be a massive miss. RIP.

 I did wonder if he'd been unwell based on how he looked but I'm 56 and look like crap now so I wouldn't have bet on it. 
I don't know much about him other than some TV appearances but very funny and from some of the comments online bit of a comedian's comedian. 
Very sad, RIP.

Sad news, such a brilliant comedian. He really was unlike all the others, he had a completely different take on comedy.

A lovely chap who made people happy dies far too young and there are scumbags flourishing in other parts of the world. Terribly unfair. 

I used to see him in some of the London comedy clubs many years ago, always made us laugh.

 I thought it would be nice to watch a couple of episodes of 15 Storeys High, it's not on iPlayer but it is on YouTube.  I've got it on DVD but I've no idea where it is.

One of my favourites ever, and great on the radio too. 

This clip sums him up for me. Brilliant, rambling monologues that just get more and more ridiculous... and the one line quip at the end is just the funniest thing I've ever heard on television!

^ I watched that clip last night, and also the first episode of 15 Storeys High.  I'd forgotten just how funny it was, I can't remember the last time I literally laughed out loud.  Damn, this really is sad news.

Really sad news - always found him a really funny comedian and his Cats does countdown "gritty" versions of childrens books was amazing - as was carrot in a box.

Cheeky, smart, earthy, witty, transgressive & with a natural instinct for a great twisted punchline.
He'll be greatly missed & like the late Linda Smith, he's simply irreplaceable. RIP
