I've never been a Stones fan but I always thought Charlie Watts had an air of coolness which set him apart from the rest of them.

Colossal Stones fan since a kid and particularly loved Charlie.  He wasn't perfect but he was the one who came closest to showing you can have that level of fame and stay decent and centred as a human being.   Of all the celebrity deaths in recent years this is the one that will hit me the hardest.

It probably means the band is over.  Nothing against Ronnie Wood, but for me the real Stones will always be Charlie, Bill, Keith, Mick and Brian/Mick Taylor.  These were the Stones when they were genuinely great. You can't be the Rolling Stones with just two of the real guys.  End of an era indeed.

For me Charlie made the Stones. Mick pranced around out front, and Keith was a solid rhythm guitarist, but Charlie held it all together from the back. As a jazz drummer he brought rhythmic influences which most rock drummers don’t. Keith said that he wove his parts around Charlie’s drumming.

Sad day indeed. My dad was a drummer for hire in 60s London and would often dep for Charlie if he could not make it to whatever Jazz gig. (Before the stones)
