@ICBM I would never have had The One I love as LP into Marshall either.

Then again, have you seen the video Tourfilm which was a gig on the Green tour? He plays a LP on a lot of the songs there and still gets his signature tones.

I read something a long time ago where he said he used the LP and Marshall specifically because he wanted to make it as "rock" as possible - although it didn't! I think you possibly can tell, if you listen closely to the last two chords - it sounds too thick to be a Rickenbacker there. Although I can get very thick sounds out of mine if I use a fair bit of gain…

I really do think it proves that a guitar player usually sounds like themself and the gear they are most associated with, even when they use something different.

Gilmour playing a couple of his classic solos on either a LP Goldtop or a Tele rather than the assumed Strat is another good example.

Two for the price of one in this song:
Thick, rounded rhythm at the start, then fuzzy goodness from about 0:45
Which are two of my favourite sounds from an electric guitar.

    Silversun Pickups

Great choice, SSP always have great tone. The whole first album was one great fuzz solo after another, with some gorgeous spacey cleans

Doyles Tone here is just perfect, surprising considering its a solid state Yamaha

On the other side of the scale but Devins tone here is one of the best metal tones live

...recorded I think Ola got pretty close on this one

  • With respect to what the OP said, I can't really choose one sound as there are so many genres & to state the obvious sounds have context, e.g I think Green Onions would sound crap with a load of feedback all over it & I don't think I'd buy "Hank Marvin plays Jesus & Mary Chain".

I think Peter Buck has one of the best sounds I've ever heard, some of my favourite bits of YouTube are live versions of Country Feedback & Strange Currencies.

Anyway, here's my one shot it has beautiful cleanish twang with oceanic reverb & speaker flapping grind. Please bear in mind it's a soundtrack, so it doesn't really have the coherence of a single song.
Also, in the unlikely event that anyone likes it & wants to own it, see if you can find this version, I'm not sure if it's from a 12" or what (I haven't got it), but the full length CD just doesn't do it justice.

That's guitar solo number 5 .. it's on the soundtrack album in it's fill 14 minute glory .. great guitar playing. I love Neil Young but rarely post his stuff on here as he's Mr Marmite .. you either love him or hate him.

    Good choice @historyisjunk ... have a wow .. :-)

I absolutely love Neil Young's tone, but I didn't post it as 'my perfect tone', because I would find it too hard to use for anything else - it's just too ragged and out of control. Perfect for him though.

Quite understand & basically agree. The reason I posted this was it does have some nearly clean stuff in it & I was really trying for one track that did it all- if you isolated the cleanish bits that would do me for alt-country & probably rockabilly with a bit of slap back & the dirt is as good as anyone's dirt. It was a long shot ;-)

@fretwired You know, I wondered if this was the best bit off the soundtrack, partly because of the duration, how embarrasing. I've actually got it & I was generally disappointed by it, but there are good bits here & there, this obviously. There is a 12" or some other format (unless I've imagined it) which I think is the perfect distillation. Cheers for pointing this out.

I think it'd have to be Petrucci, from this particular section of Images and Words: Live in Tokyo 1993:

2:00 on. Pretty much perfect IMO. Lots of gain so it sustains for ages, but it's also very clear and seems to respond to picking dynamics.

If I could play like that too, that'd be nice.

    Cleans-wise, this comes close:

i love that Petrucci vid. i do also prefer his tone back then. he is one of my biggest influences. also makes me wonder why am i selling my mark v.

part of the reason his tone is so clear is the jpm. i used to have one and its the clearest sounding guitar ive ever had. distortion with it is aggressive but clean at the same time. makes me miss it actually :(

    Anything from the VH1 album
Knopfler on the Love over Gold album
Satriani on 'The Extremist' or FIABD' albums
    Nuno on Pornograffiti
Gary Moore on the 'Still Got the Blues' album
SRV on 'Pride and Joy' or 'Cold Shot'
Bonamassa on 'Sloe Gin' or 'Happier Blues'
    Eric Johnson on everything
    Frusciante on 'Snow'
    Steve Rothery on everything

Can't choose between them really. All great in their own right
