Supergroups

What's Hot
Sometimes they're an indulgence, other times they're really good.

What's your favourite "supergroup"?

I've been enjoying Them Crooked Vultures, Killer Be Killed & Axewound recently.

    Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Much as I like Neil Young, I don’t think they were their best with him.

Souther, Hillman, Furay are another favourite of the same era.

Audioslave and Killer Be Killed are great. Gone Is Gone had potential but the songs never really went anywhere for me.

It's a very vaguely defined category. Almost any band that wasn't four mates from school seems to be defined as a supergroup by someone.
However, the two that came to mind:
Chickenfoot - seemed like fun unlike most of the individual's other projects.
General Public - people from the West Midlands being big in the USA in the 80s.
Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

It's a set of people famous for their previous bands getting together to produce awful mish-mash music.

There are successful exceptions - Audioslave was a good suggestion by TTBZ.

Not one for supergroups usually but the Pavement/Silkworm mashup in Crust Brothers was a meeting of US indie rock awesomeness.

Ah. Like the Travelling Wilbury's sort of thing then.

Most of the Canterbury groups were 'Supergroups' in one way or another. They shared members, even the Hatfields were a supergroup, coming as they did from previous groups (Caravan / Gong / Delivery / Egg). Wilde Flowers were the only 'original' group before they split to form Softs & Caravan. So both of those count as Supergroups too.

Despite being aware of them, I had to look them up!

    Yes. Very much like that.

If it counts, the final original incarnation of the Eagles - Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Don Felder, Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmit - which recorded most of the Eagles Live album. Felder hadn't been in a successful band before the Eagles, but the others had.

What happened to Bernie Leadon. For me the Eagles were never quite as good after he left. Very talented musician who added a lot to their sound on those first few albums.
