Should I buy matching cab to go with my amp head?

What's Hot
allenallen Frets: 707
I’ve just bought an amp head.

Choices are:

1. use my combo amps as a speaker cab

2. get a cheap cab on ebay (quite nice ones for 1-200)

3. buy the matching cab (£600)!

3a get a custom cab made (£similar?)

My OCD wants to get the matching cab.

I’m only playing at home so doesn’t matter to the audience.

Main issue is whether I’ll get much back when I come to sell it.

    What amp is it?
    What are the combos?

I think cabs always lose money on resale, I picked up a Marshall 4 x 12 for £40 a couple years ago

If it is in a public space that you want it to look nice then get a matching cab, What is the matching cab, I am sure some cab builders could do a matching cab for less than £600

BTW if you do use your combo make sure to disconnect the combo amp from the speaker, you can not run two amps into one speaker.

Zilla can also do a custom cab config (vertical 2x12, mixed speakers, etc) so you can get a custom look and a cab that suits your sound and space/usage.

Only thing to bear in mind is resell value might not be high if it’s too unique to your requirements.

Could be difficult if it's a Matchless head.

Your best option for minimising financial loss is not to buy anything. Your second best option for minimising loss is to buy second hand, and one might pop up before you get around to buying new. Third is buying a branded cab, with commission build fourth. I guess you knew all that.

Realistically, how about playing with what you’ve got until the honeymoon period is over. By that time you’ll know whether you want to keep the amp, and have a better idea of what cab size and speaker type you want.

Definitely second hand, that Artisan cab is £800 new...... £200 used.

  • Theres plenty of good cabs out there 2nd hand, is it a specific colour or easy to match?

Branded cabs are often massively overpriced for what they are. Plenty of good zillas our there and 2nd hand speakers, you can get a creamback Heavy for around £120 2nd hand, or various other good speakers and a quality empty head for around £150.

Other way is to instead save up for a combo of the same brand/colour then sit head on top then you have 2 amp sounds and better resale-ability!

I've been through this saga with my Two Rock Studio Signature - if you really think this head is a keeper then I'd suggest saving for the matching cab, the whole resale thing doesn't mean anything if you keep it. The matching pinstripe detail is really cool and unique too!

When I finally got the matching 1x12 for my amp I was just happier, still chuffed with it 18 months later.
