Boss DD200 opinions

What's Hot

Probably been done to death, but I know the DD200 has been out for a while now and lots of folks have had a chance to test it out properly.

I'm looking to change up my board and considering replacing my main delay (ehx xo deluxe memory man) with something more flexible. DD200 caught my eye as I have the rv500 and eq200 which are stellar. While I love the tone of the MM, I was hoping the Boss unit might get close to that organic sound. Am I way off and expecting too much from a digital pedal? Or would I really even notice the difference live?

Asking the hive mind for your experience.

Great delay. I've got one to shift. Just not using it.

  • Mine was great. I just didn’t use most of its capabilities so moved it on for that sole reason

I've had one.   Personally I prefer the DD500 alot due to its flexibility ie being able to use two patches very easily and tap tempo.  Plus I found not having a proper screen on the DD200 to be really quite unhelpful.

They sound the same though and if you just want to use  a few basic patches which you won't change much then its a good option.  I don't think you'll miss MM personally as the Boss units are really really good.

I think it's great. Sounds really good and love having some patches that can be accessed by my feet without fiddling around. Probably doesn't have quite the gooey warmth of one of the old famous boxes, or quite the pristine quality of Strymon but it's pretty damn close. I don't think it's trying to be either of those anyway and they're just doing the Boss thing of offering good sounds in a good format at a decent price.

A lot of the subtlety of delay goes out the window in a mix anyway so, unless you're using a specific sound in a specific way for example as a part of a song, it will do what you need. Although, if you really like the old pedal, get a used one first and try it out before selling something that might be hard to replace.

I have a DD-200 on my board and it's great. I am not a big delay user, mostly using it for solos, but I do recall presets via Midi. If you're looking for a super DD-8 rather than a mini DD-500 then it's perfect. It has up to 128 presets

I might make myself unpopular by suggesting the Line6 M5 as an alternative. They are dead cheap now. I just got one to act as a multi modulation pedal but I'm quite blown away by the quality of the delays and reverbs. It's all the algorithms from the 4 series but you can only use one effect at a time. It has 24 presets and Midi

It's a worthy recommendation any time the question is anything to do with flexibility, the ability to store presets, or value for money.

Even if you only use one class of the effects it does (delay/reverb/modulation/synths/drives) it's still a bargain, and if you can access the MIDI functions, or better yet find a way to move it around the signal chain (Boss ES-5/8 for instance) so that you can use *all* the effects, it's an incredible bit of kit.

Don't talk politics and don't throw stones. Your royal highnesses.

    What @thomasw88 said.

I too have had both and preferred the DD500. For some reason the "mix" level on the 200 seemed a lot "hotter" - I generally had to run the mix level a lot lower on the 200.
It's still a good choice though.

I think it's great. Had a dd500 and sold it because of all of the menu diving.

I've got a lot of delays and the DD-200 is one of the best. I particularly like the analog delay sound on it.

Go to 19 minutes - or use the chapter markers for my analog delay comparison

Or versus the Meris LVX (believe it or not stands up well)

I concur. the analogue mode is awesome. Presumably based on the DM2.

it's too much for most, indeed I've moved it to synth effect duties as is stereo.

Can you send the analog delay into self-oscillating madness?

Yep I use it this way with an ES-8. I did a lot of research and irrespective of price there wasn't much that ticked all the boxes for me. There are new creative possibilities now it's patched in

I've got a DD-200, M5 and X-vive EchoMan here. I'll see if I can get them sounding similar record some comparison clips. I need to demo some stuff

My preference would be be a Boss delay pedal over an EH one any day of the week.

I liked mine but I tended to stick with the Tape setting so I sold it for an El Capistan.  I'd definitely consider another if I needed a multi-function delay.

I had one and unfortunately I felt that the quality of the delay and some of the delay effects were distinctively average, especially when compared to something like a Timeline. So it wasn't for me so I sold it and went back to that.
