I wanted a dual drive that covered a lot of ground for a covers band and this really delivers. You can get a nice low gain overdrive right through to distortion and some nice fuzzy sounds too.

I’m using it with a Tone Master Princeton so I have a nice clean, two gain stages and can use my Klon clone to boost any of the three sounds, it works a treat.

I’d been looking at a few Instagram favourites before questioning whether I really needed to spend £250-£300. I think this is a steal at around £100. I’ve also got a Fender Space Delay only my board that cost £59.  I do love myself a Strymon but there really are some good cheaper pedals around that are worth a try!

I've just bought a Moller2 for my board because I'm selling my SoulMate and that’s the drive I use the most. T-Rex is very underrated, I think. I like the Reptile delay and RoomMate reverbs, too.

I do fancy giving them a go, are they based on a particular drive circuit or just their own thing? Anything else you can compare it to?

    Moller2 or Mudhoney?

    I used one for years.

Some 'boutique is best' people turned their nose up at it but I thought it was an excellent pedal.

Mudhoney is meant to be RAT based.

Don't talk politics and don't throw stones. Your royal highnesses.

I have one on my board. It got on great with my Vox AC15, which was pretty fussy about dirt pedals, both at medium and high gain.

I’ve recently switched to a TMPR myself though, and personally I don’t like how it sounds so much with the new amp, so I’m in the market for a new distortion.

You’re right about the weird snobbery towards this pedal, though. TPS did a video talking to Neil Finn’s tech, who audibly sighed about how he couldn’t get Neil to stop using the MH2.

The Moller2 is two pedals in one. First in the signal path, you get a light overdrive that works well with a clean amp and adds a level of sparkle/grit/breakup to the tone. Responds to the guitar volume knob. Next you have a clean boost with a switch to add extra bass if you think it needs fattening up at the bottom. Both work independently. The overdrive section and the overdrive on the SoulMate sound identical, so job done for me regarding the new board.

Never tried a Mudhoney, but T-Rex says the distortion on my SoulMate is based on the Mudhoney, and that does sound like a Rat to me on certain settings.

Yep. It's kinda a more refined Rat with a conventional tone control rather than the filter. The mids are different.

    It's a great sounding circuit.

I’ve not had a Rat so I can’t compare, but I read somewhere that it’s more like a Rat when it’s in Boost mode. In the Normal mode you can get some nice low gain drive. I have it set up currently with one side of each, so it’s got a lot of a range.
