I don't want to derail this thread any more but thanks people, this is very interesting. I see that I can get a pair of Moondrop Chus or KZ SZ10 Pros and a Behringer P2 for peanuts which seems like a good way to get stuck in and experiment a bit. I think the hardest challenge will be getting some of my more conservative bandmates to consider that it is worth exploring. I've already had the "ah, it's not the same feel" thing; well maybe not but that doesn't automatically mean the advantages won't outweigh the disadvantages. Next up will be the "we've always done it like this" comments but we're a party / pub band, not Motorhead.

We get on well and I won't push too hard, everyone has a different personality. For example our bassist is absolutely brilliant yet doesn't think too much about tone - turns up with a heavy and fairly uninspiring Behringer combo, not sure he EQs it much, and off we go. He sounds great because of his playing and attitude and that's what he wants to do, it's out of my remit to do anything other than suggest. Our singer will have the most genuine problem (IMO) as he likes to work the room and he'd need wireless, which is expensive for quality.

Really good gig last night it's years since we played the Plough. A good bit of dancing and loads of compliments afterwards. A couple came over from East Grinstead as they saw the ad on Lemonrock.
Last gig with stand in drummer and he did OK.

  • The usual Great Lyde, Yeovil gig. Start off with 10 people in the bar and end up with 25 shouting for more at 11pm. Not doing this one again next year...

Sounds like a couple of our recent small pub gigs. Fewer and fewer people going out at weekends.

Just got another video from the gig - here's a cover of 'Burn':

Les Paul with BK Rebel Yells coil split, all through a Fractal Axe FX 3.

Just got in from my last gig this year ( never do NYE far too many wankers) and it was a charity gig for Medical aid for Palestine , my only unpaid gig this year but definitely feeling the glow of giving something back to a worthy cause.
last nights gig was a blinder, all players on ears with modellors, unfortunately drummer had acoustic kit and hit it very hard, after half an hours soundcheck had it under control but due to the kit volume gig was quite a bit louder than it should have been, but the pay off was lots of energy in the room and happy punters

Ps Helix with a mandolin and banjo sounded awesome!

Another social club, nearly all pensioners who claimed they wanted to dance, but that was just the gobby few. Drummist brought a large group of fans with his new girlfriend, so his head was not really in the job half the time. Add to that, he turned up without his cymbals….transpires said girlfriend had helpfully stored them under the bed and not told him! Disaster averted though, they arrived just in time, along with a spare set borrowed from a nearby studio.

  • Final gig of 2025 (no NYE gig this year - which is quite the anomaly) last night. A wedding, with a good few songs which (a) we had not played before and (b) were quite daunting.
Add to this the fact that for over half the gig I was on bass - not my usual instrument and not an instrument I have had time to learn to play properly - and it was quite a nervy start to the gig...but we got there and got them up and dancing. Groom gave us a rave review (in person, on video - our agent insists upon it these days) and couldn't have been happier, which is what it's all about.

Hopefully I'll actually get to play guitar on my own gigs a bit more next year! (Loooong story...)

Saturday night was our last gig of 2025 at the local golf club. 100 people in for an expensive buffet which actually looked great. We played our 'party set' which includes more '60's/'70's than usual but it all went down great with people dancing all evening. We love putting 3-part harmonies into our songs and the party set gives us loads of opportunities so we enjoyed that.
I've got to say though, that I really felt my 60+ age when packing up the gear the wrong side of midnight...

  • We played a village pub last night that we haven't been to before, and ended up with less than a dozen people. They'd put us in a function room away from the main, and only, bar, and if it hadn't been for a big group of girls who had dropped in on the way home after a day out in Edinburgh, it would've been a disaster.

If a pub is quiet on a Saturday night during the Festive Season then there really is less and less hope for live music.

  • Towns looked empty on way last night but our gig was absolutely rammed,,  great night.   Venue said Boxing Day was quiet though.

Don't know what to expect NYE.  Very large WMC function room space to fill.

Excellent gig last night (a 21st party rather than a NYE event).  Function room attached to a bar where we play every couple of months.  This was the first time that I'd been in the room and I was surprised, not to say shocked, at how little space we had.  We managed with one PA cab (the room was quite small) and roped ourselves together to prevent anyone from falling off the stage  =)

I was worried that we were going to be playing to the parents generation but, as it turned out, the kids loved us and we went down a storm.  Given the way that venue numbers have been dropping the last couple of years it was really good to be playing to a packed room.

Finished our 2nd spot at 11:00pm and were packed up and out 30 minutes later, just as the venue next door was filling up.  Pulled onto my drive on the stroke of midnight and celebrated NY with my family.

First gig with the Line 6 Stadium XL, which was faultless.

Last long-term-dep gig with a pub covers band playing all the bangers - their new guy takes over now. Crazy busy dance floor and a fun night.

Very busy ticketed night at a WMC NYE bash.. 4 hours of playing taking a toll now though!

Nice to see the place sold out. It is hard to know what to expect these days.

New Year's Eve gig with the band last night. Second gig with our new drummer, a couple of tempo and ending hiccups, but overall a really good night. Crowd really enthusiastic, we even had line dancing throughout most of both sets (we're a country rock band). Acoustic, banjo and mandolin sounding really good through Helix LT.

My band - Crimson on Silver  For sale - Blackstar HT-5S

Gear - Guitars, amps, effects and shizz. Edited for Phil_aka_Pip, who is allergic to big long lists.
