How did last night's gig go?

  • We headlined a town centre gig on sat as part of Telford's Super Saturday. Sort of pop up tent marquee with a stage at one end, bar at the other. Doors opened at 12pm, first band at 2pm, and we went on at 8pm for a 2 hour slot.

We took some beach balls along to throw out to the crowd to get them going .. they worked a treat. In fact too well, they were a nightmare. Kept coming back at us on the stage and landing on my helix ... who knew the impact from an inflatable beach ball would be enough to change a helix patch?! But they did, and frequently. I did get some quality headers in though.

Absolute carnage. Loved it. Will do it again next year hopefully.

We had our last gig of the year booked for Friday. It didn’t happen. I woke up with chest pain, which got steadily worse until I couldn’t even lift a phone to my ear. Pain has gone now, and I don’t know what caused it.

I’m shocked and annoyed at having to cancel. It’s the first time in 50 years that I’ve had to do that. It feels so wrong to let a customer down. I hate letting the band down. It also worries me that something like this might force me to stop gigging altogether. I don’t play that frequently any more, but it’s a fundamental part of my life, and would leave an enormous hole.
Did you get that chest pain checked out @Roland ?

  • @Col_Decker that sounds like chaos! Fun though.

@Roland definitely have yourself checked over.  Might be nothing but better to know.

Our last gig of the year was Saturday.  Went ok, but a couple of us were in a bit of a weird mood,  I think tiredness and a bit of alcohol had made people a bit short tempered.  It went down well enough but I kind of gave one member a bit of a telling off after which isn't my normal way. Just for basic stuff like paying attention to the singer and not playing between songs. Still not sure whether it was a good idea or not.  Anyway that's us for the year, looking forward to getting back out in January.

Packed town pub last Sat night. Once I found the band I discovered joy of joys it was "world's smallest stage time". Whole band crammed into a 1.5m x 3m floor space. Tight.
Right on top of my amp and cheek to jowl with the singer.
Enjoyable night though - punters enjoyed the pre-xmas bash - and got to road test my new multi-effects unit.

  • We played my local on Saturday night which was our last gig of the year. We hadn't played together for about six weeks but didn't drop too many clangers. I set the video cams up but forgot to hit record - too much chatting before the start etc. Really nice sounding room and we put my little Marshall through the PA a bit which felt amazing. Some real highlights musically with dancers for most of the first half and all of the second, too.

Had a strange gig on Christmas eve as part of a bill that featured two country acts, an indie four-piece and a grime rapper. Our band is meant to be flexible in terms of line-up but so many people dropped out that it ended up just being a duo, with Tony singing and playing guitar and me on pedal steel and dobro. Unsurprisingly the audience was a bit thin but I actually really enjoyed it in a 'fuck it, let's get stuck in' kind of way.

Private party (lovely people) in Darkest Cheshire. One set as a 4pc with me on gtr/vox then another as a 7 with me as audio-tech and gtr/BVs.

Left at 4:30am and taught the car to swim. 2hrs to do a 1hr drive but feeling lucky to be home.

My lot were the middle band in a 3 band bill for a NYE gig at a Golfing bar in Heanor, Derbyshire. Lovely crowd and bands/people to deal with. Only issue was the corrugated steel roof above the stage. So the acoustics were incredibly weird. Like someone had put an extra reverb pedal on in places. The headliners struggled more with it that we did. But it was a set of three solid sets & a good night out.

  • Played to a sold out Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath, Birmingham last night. To think we played on the same stage UB40, Ocean Colour Scene and an as-yet unsigned Ed Sheeran all cut their teeth on. Wild.

Played really well too - even got compliments for my vocals which is a rare occurrence.

    Loved every minute of it.
Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

It was a bit quiet in the Swan Crawley last night but most of the people we knew as it's a home turf gig for us. January gigs are often a bit less well attended as it is the xmas hangover and people are a bit skint. Still we had a good gig.

  • Chard in Somerset has a reputation as being a bit 'rough' around the edges and didn't disappoint last night. We played to an enthusiastic audience of 30 somethings under the influence of what we presume to be various substances including a copious supply of Mini Guinesses. Once we finished just shy of midnight a banging disco fired up forcing us to keep our IEMs in place while packing up.
A fight broke out up against my pristine VW T5 which I was most upset about. We made our escape through the assembly of police cars and won't be going back...gigging is fun ain't it!?

Audio-teching four excellent acts in Burnley:

    Brother Bastion
    Zoltar
    Dilemmas
    Rafters

An absolute pleasure - but loud!

I'd never even heard of a 'Mini Guinness', I had to Google it (thought it might be slang for one of them new drugs they've got these days, but no it's just a cocktail).

Another home turf gig last night. The White Hart in Crawley high street. Not massively busy, might have been a bit better if some racist cow hadn't been abusive to some asylum seekers so they left.
I had some trauma with my pedal board, the sound kept disappearing. I stripped out the spark mini and it was ok after that.

Played The Chapel upstairs at the Angel Microbrewery, Nottingham. With Club Rivera, an Italian band and a young pop solo act, Jude Forsey.  Used my Blackstar Artisan 15H & 2 x 12. Amp was great, pedalboard was fine aside from the flux control on one of my HX One’s not switching off. So might have to go back to expression pedals.

Played the Potters in Burgess Hill last night.
Managed to get a parking spot then one of the bar staff helped us load in (that's rare).
The band area wasn't cleared though as there were punters in the tables which made set up a bit slow and we didn't get a sound check. We managed though.
@flangingfred did a sterling job sitting in on guitar as did our old singer on bass. First run out with a valve amp for a while, really got the Origin 20 cooking and the Gunshot sounded awesome.

Pay day gigs in pubs are the best. We, played the hop and grain in Cambridge last night. Parking right by the venue, Pa and soundman provided. Luxury. Nice lively crowd and we played on until 1130. Next week we play the even more lovely Grapes in Bury St Edmund’s.

Played Victoria Inn in Derby on Sat night. Great venue, great fun, small crowd who told us they loved it. Loads of people who were 'definitely coming' cried off at last minute. And DerbyFC away meant a lot of regulars were not back in time. Bloody football.
What are bands doing to feed the damn algorithm? FB and Insta seem determined to only feed paid ads to the masses. (Which is totally their right as its their social monopoly).

It's a mystery isn't it? Sometimes I think it just depends on what's on TV the night of the gig.
