Looking for a pedal based modeller again, currently using NAM captures in Reaper but I really want to get away from my pc when I'm playing. Been thinking about getting a Tonex (maybe start with the One as it's so cheap) but the sheer amount of bad sounding captures on ToneNet puts me off a bit! Seems like there's too many variables in the capture process (and external gear) that can make it sound bad. For this reason I've been wondering if saving more for a Nano Cortex would be a better option - all the QC/NC captures are more self contained with the hardware on the unit so in theory the capture quality would be more consistent? Plus I'd be able to get my own DI captures of all the nice amps we have at work

Btw if anyone is looking for a nice Marshall Tonex capture, I found a great Jubilee one called GN Jubilee V30. Most other Jubilee captures sound/feel dead and lifeless but this has the right kinda feel compared to what I'm used to with the real amp. Didn't get on with the "Perfect Marshall" Friedman capture, seems too buzzy and scooped or something.

Does anyone know if the ONE can do delay/reverb spillover between patches? That'd make it a lot more useful to me in a live situation, as would being able to do tap tempo through the MIDI thing.

    Not that I’ve experienced.

@TTBZ  I think it depends what your after tone wise. I’d say a good third of the free ones I’ve sampled have been good for me with the rest being a bit shit.
Having said that though my ears may be terrible as every man and his dog swear by the Amalgam captures and I think their poo.

  • Fwiw, I bought the Amalgam Tonex One Bundle number 1, and of the 20 captures in that, I'd say 4 are either crap or just not my cup of tea (the Mesa ones especially are not my bag, then I find the clean tweed a bit boring and the driven vox a bit nasally). The rest though are all quality.

I'd say let your own ears decide what's good and what's not. I went through a few of the most liked/downloaded ToneNet captures and found that although there were some gems in there (like the "Perfect Marshall") I disliked a fair few of those too, so YMMV.
Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

Tonex one gives you basic version of Tonex software- which is limited in number of tone models that can be stored ( I think ), but still allows access to ToneNet, I don't bother digging into the 40,000 patches on there, just go straight to 'top ten' and you can't go wrong.
There is a reason 'perfect Marshall' is usually in the top 3, and the person that did that capture also has quite a few others that do well.
Don't judge them too much by the preview, as they are all captured with different input gain settings, so something that initially sounds too gainy or fizzy might well work great when you actually try it with your own rig, I find 'perfect Marshall' works amazingly well with my tele / broadcaster thing, and it responds very well to the volume knob on the guitar- clean to OD from2-10.
I think the Tonex One is so good, I just pre-ordered the Satch version, which cost me £215 ( with coupons) from Andertons, the Satch pack contains 27 amps - 50 odd captures, was done in Hagars studio, and the pedal is supposed to be limited to 3000, the software alone is £99, so I liked it just to have it hanging around as a dinky interface { usb powered ), and I do like the sound of at least his Marshall and EVH captures, plenty of nice Fender stuff in there too.
My other one is taped on top of an £11.99 headphone amp and a usb powerbank, plugged into a 60 watt speaker for perfect home volume-sounds spectacular.

I’d be interested in trying this. Ultimately if there is a way of taking midi program change messages from a controller and sending those to the ToneX over USB for changing amps that would make me very happy!
Post is up. Works exactly like you'd want, too, for changing amps (with the exception of it being BT not USB for the controller).
Brilliant thank you. I’ll have a read.

Tonex SE (which comes with Tonex One) gives unlimited downloads.
Double check that you’ve registered the serial number in IK Manager software too.
