N7-SGD and Ibanez Edge trem setup question.....

What's Hot

Got my first real 7 string (but I didn't buy it at the Five and Dime.....)

Ibanez RG827Z. My first 7 sting and my first RG. Loving it on both counts

I've hoiked all that stop bar nonsense out of the trem cavity so now it floats and flutters properly. My question is this...the bridge plate is wedge shaped. What's "level"...top edge or bottom edge? I'm assuming bottom edge but thought I'd double check. I have no experience with Ibanez trems so I'm just carrying over my approach from FRs.....

I have an RG370AHMZ with the same vibrato - albeit with only six strings. I adjust the spring tension to have the bottom of the vibrato casting parallel with the top of the body. This puts the "floor" of the baseplate parallel with the string path.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

My RG550 is set (roughly) level with the bottom. It came set up slightly forward of that, so I tightened the spring claw a fraction.

Been playing it non-stop for a week or so, is very comfortable and flat refuses to go out of tune.

Strings are 9s, fresh set of Slinkies if that's of any use.

  • Not sure if that trem is similar to the lo pro edge, but you may be able to see the knife edge in the side of the wedge shaped part of the trem. I set my Ibanez up so the knife edge is level to the body and I essentially ignore the shape of the trem block.

but, as ever that’s my preference and YMMV.

I followed this tutorial when I bought an RG550 a few months ago and it worked perfectly for my edge trem, the guy's quite amusing as well!
