What's Hot

I’m considering some proper chimey, vintage output pickups for my USA strat now that I’m playing through quite a chewy Orange amp. The stock pickups have a mix of alnico 2, 3 and 4 magnets in middle and neck pickups and I need  more sparkle than that now.

Not ruling out Triple Blues either, but I’m not sure I even need pickups that hot/fat, I suppose I could drop them a bit?

Any Pre-BS/R66 users? Anyone tried both?

I have a Route 66 with NOS PE wire in the neck of my Strat. It sounds how the ideal 60s Strat sounds in my head.

By comparison I have a couple of Strat pickups with NOS heavy formvar from Mojo in the neck positions of a Les Paul and a Gretsch Tennessee Rose and they are similarly great but with a different vibe. A bit more 50s sounding -janglier/airier cleans but not as solid sounding as the PE with dirt.

I have a Route 66 trio with equal length rod magnet polepieces. These are not currently in a guitar but are ear marked for a walnut project. (If I ever find a suitable neck!)

These pickups made my elderly Ibanez RG200 sound like a Fender Stratocaster.

I cannot recall whether I have ever tried the OCP Pre-BS set.

I don't think the triple blues are that hot or fat (at least the neck and middle, I haven't tried the bridge), they're pretty much vintage output (or very slightly into vintage hot). However, Ash is completely correct (as you would expect!)- if you want more sparkle, then Formvar is probably the way to go (I think the triple blues are enamel).

  • So the Pre-BS 62’s have arrived, they’re fitted (my wiring may need to be revisited and neatened up when I can face it), and they sound great.

Delicate sparkly fingerpicked stuff, spanky funk and snarly blues and rock all present and correct. Lovely balance of clarity and punch. Extremely pleased.

Glad you like em ... I shall be doing a limited run of hand wound 'new old stock Heavy Formvar' Pre BS 62s at some point to use up my stock of 60s wire. watch this space :-)
