1957 Gretsch 6199 Convertible (The forerunner to the Sal Salvador Jazz guitar)

1957 and in incredible, original condition.  Hand carved Adirondack top with heavily figured maple back and sides (all solid woods).  Ebony fingerboard and bridge with Gretsch 'thumbnail' fret markers (neo classic).  It plays perfectly with a punchy cutting acoustic tone.  Plugged in, it nails the classic clean jazz tones with an original, single gold De Armond Dynasonic pickup.  Single volume and tone controls give a surprising amount of flexibility.  This is the forerunner to the Sal Salvador, one of the first signature guitars and used the very best materials.  In its original, 67 year old Deluxe Gretsch case which is in equally good condition.

£3,250  SOLD

1978 Martin D-35
It's a lovely old Martin in its original Martin moulded case (black with burnt orange lining).
Great condition with no damage or repairs. Spruce top with rosewood back and sides, it's just been in for a setup and the frets have been freshly crowned and polished.  It has a passive under saddle pickup fitted (no controls and needs either a preamp or DI box).  Like so many old Martin Rosewood guitars, it has faded evenly and doesn't look like the modern, dark, Indian Rosewood. It plays well, sounds good and is ready to record.  There are far better pickups around now and while this sounds good in the mix with a modest preamp, it would benefit from a modern pickup if you like to have onboard control.

£2,400 SOLD

  • I tried selling a vintage D35 here and decided to keep it. The guitar sounds infinitely better than a new one and I bet yours does too. Good luck with the sale.

Aaaarrggh!  I'm covering my ears and trying to ignore that - because I know you're so right. :)  My D18 is 1965 and modern ones don't come close.
