So sad - Like Steve above (we are almost the same age give or take a day) Johnny Walker was probably the first DJ I was aware of on Radio 1

Only just retired as well from his Sunday afternoon stint - RIP

Nice way to go though. Unlike a lot of presenters he seemed to have a deep and genuine love of music.

He was always so respectful of the artists in his interviews which is another quality that many lack.

It seemed that respect was mutual from many of the artists too.

I hope I'm still doing something I love 2 months before I die.

    RIP Johnny.

Just heard that Johnny Walker has died. He only had  about four weeks retirement he must have been very poorly. Condolences to his wife. I loved his shows, he was a real seventies man. I don't think they could have replaced him with a better guy than whispering Bob Harris.
R I P Johnny you are already missed.

We knew it was coming yet it's still a bit of a jolt and sad news. A giant of British rock music broadcasting and the US for a few years too. A true original, one of the Pirates and he'll be hugely missed.

Just listening to Radio 2 sounds of the 70’s now, with Bob Harris reminiscing about Johnnie….RIP

  • I heard him on his last Sunday show and he sounded very weak. One of the few DJs/radio presenters that if I was flicking between stations I'd stop and think it was going to be worth a listen. As Relic said he expressed a genuine enthusiasm for the music and you don't hear that much these days. RIP.

Great career innings of 58 years pays testimony to the " Do what you love" ethos of Johnnie Walker sadly lost to us today.............many a silent toast to him tonight.

I remember Johnnie taking over the evening slot on GLR in the early '90s and I would always listen to him if I was driving home late from work.  He was extremely entertaining, played some great music and could be pleasingly acidic.  I harboured a suspicion that he was 'very relaxed' on more than one occasion which made the shows even more enjoyable.  His autobiography is quite a good read.

RIP Johnnie, and thanks for the memories and the music.

Loved his shows on a Sunday. I'm sure Johnnie will continue them in heaven.

  • One of my favourite DJ’s.
Read his book a while ago and he appeared to have lived a full life.
Listening to his shows earlier this year he was clearly struggling. I understand the last few months were recorded due to his deteriorating health.

I recall his show on Luxembourg in the late 70s, in which he introduced me to the Dead Kennedys amongst others. Great that he was able to do the DJ job he loved almost until the end.

At school we used to go to a friend's house for lunch every day and listen to Johnny and his music quiz Pop the Question.

It was bad enough listening to his signing off from his show just a few weeks back and I hoped he would enjoy some relief on his retirement. Very sad he's gone so soon after. RIP.
