Are you signed up for an event @TeleKinesis ? Which one?

(This might be just adding another option to the bewildering choice, but) I found the Marathon Handbook plans good. Sounds like their 8 week plan might be a good fit for you.

    Good luck!

Can anyone recommend me a trail marathon?

I've done one road marathon (Manchester 2022) and a fair few road halves, but given the choice I prefer running off road. So I'm looking for an event this spring / summer which offers great scenery, and where I can forget about even trying for a PB :)

Great scenery to me means hills, which in turn probably means a long drive from home (Cambridge). Depending on the destination I might be able to use my parents' place (North Yorkshire) as a stopping-off point.

I would like to go for the marathon distance again, but wouldn't rule out a half if that's the longest option offered by a nice event. I find laps demotivating though, so I'm looking for a single loop course.

So far the leading contender is Lakeland Trails at Coniston (8th June).

Another one I might have considered was the Sunset Trail at Holkham, but sadly the organising company closed down last year :( Shame, as a friend really enjoyed it (despite the lack of hills), and would have been a relatively short drive.

Any others I should look at?
If you're happy to travel a bit then the Clarendon Marathon between Salisbury and Winchester is a lovely trail route.

Hampshire Hoppit is also brilliant and they give you beer at the finish :)

Or can highly recommend the Serpent Trail .. this has a range of distances and is you fancy camping you can stay overnight at the Petersfield Rugby Club start line.. often recommended as a good first ultra,  lovely scenery and great atmosphere and crew.

These sound great and I have friends in the area, so might be tempted myself.

Joined a mate today in his London Marathon training, I did a steady 11.5km while he was on a Zone 2 16km run. Finished off with an hour walk. Feeling it now a bit.

Getting back into regular runs.. couple of short runs midweek (*4 and 5 mile) then 8 miles yesterday and a 9 mile today.  36 miles so far in January.. hoping to average between 90-100 each month this year...

  • Thanks for the trail run suggestions - all of those look great!

I've signed up for the Hardmoors White Horse in May. It's less than an hour's drive from my parents' house so the logistics should be easy. The 46km along and more than 1km up ... might be a bit tougher!

Thanks @djspecialist! I have seen that plan, sort of using it now actually smile

I am signed up to an event, yeah. It's called the Original Marathon, which (they say) echoes the first modern Olympic route of 1908. I wanted to do it last year, but found out too late to train! Also applied for the London ballot, but I think that was always a long shot and didn't get a place.

Anyway, good run yesterday, 16-odd miles. Tired afterwards, but pretty happy with that.

Ooh that looks a brilliant route, it’ll be beautiful. It’s only about 25min from me so I’m tempted by it too, high go and try a bit of the route in the next month as part of my “different half marathon every month”.
Funny that it’s part of the 26.2 series but is 29miles!
Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman.
My boss told me "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"... now I'm sat in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman.

Yes they are being a bit cheeky with the "26.2" moniker. The shortest in the series is 27 miles, and the longest is 30!

Trails routes have a habit of being 'approximate' distances or 'not less than'.. which really clobbers you when you're knackered and wondering where the bell the finish line is as you go over the distance...

Joined my mate on his london marathon training again today. Did 16km which is my longest run to date. Probably won't go that far again as I'm not training for a marathon. Got a couple of blisters to show for ir too.

@Col_Decker that doesn’t sound right re. the blisters it sounds more like a shoe/sock issue and once sorted shouldn’t hold you back. But if you don’t want to push the mileage for other reasons fair enough.

Yeah I think it was a sock issue too, not had it before doing 5 and 10km runs.

Another 8 miles tonight at a steady pace.

The stress/anxiety of the last month coupled with an unintentional(but beneficial) dry January has made for a good month - signing off at 78 miles for the month and giving my legs a couple of days off ready for February 1st!

120km done this month. That's the first proper month of running without any plantar fascitis issues for ages so the reduction in December has worked. Shame I see to have one good week and then catch some stupid bug the next. I can't remember a winter that's been so sniffle-heavy.

145.5km for January so quite happy with that as a start to the year.  Aiming to manage similar each month but will have to see...
