When you say sounds great, what’s different to a regular plectrum?

That is a very good question!   It’s smoother over the strings for one, I use Blue Chip mainly after trying out dozens of different brands, they seem to have a far more musical sound to them and, imo, make my acoustics sound better. Most other pics seem to affect the tone in ways I didn’t like.
these Hense pics are very similar to the BC, strumming sounds warmer and fuller, lead lines not so clear.

hard not to sound like a cork sniffer but after years of playing I now view these pics as an EQ device, rather than just a bit of plastic to hit the strings with.

worth exploring maybe, especially as thousands are spent on beautiful acoustics only for a cheap bit of plastic to be the “interface”

It took me a while to accept that the price was worth paying, but I’ve been using them for about a year. They’re the closest thing I’ve found to tortoise shell, which was banned in the 70s. I like the warm attack. They also don’t seem to wear as quickly as more conventional  plastics, The downside is they don’t come in bright colours, so are easily lost.

There's a US based mandolin forum that has a couple of pick sampler packs that circulate around the members, and when one was taking an international trip, I took the opportunity to have it for a couple of weeks. Amongst the Blue Chips, high end casein picks etc, the Hense Speedy Cream was a standout for me - it feels smooth on the strings and sounds warm with little pick noise, but I like the shaping of the points particularly. Still haven't got around to buying one though, it wasn't that much of a game changer that I would have immediately felt compelled to change from what I have around (a couple of different gauge Wegens, Hawk casein picks and a few cheaper standard picks for the places I like lighter gauges).

Do you have the means to do a simple a b demo? A few chords and single notes to see if it translates?

Im interested because I’ve never found a plectrum that has that sweet finger nail quality.

a few years ago just to experiment I bought a bag of barely used plectrums from a guitarist who’d been trying loads out. I can’t honestly say that any of them especially different except some were warmer in attack and some brighter. I suppose that’s just it.

I like bigger rounded edged picks but find most too inflexible. Any recommendations?

I could try and do an AB, only got an I phone though, leave it with me.

Have a look at these from Clifford Essex, I purchased a sample pack of his buffalo horn pics some time ago and found them interesting, also good to support the pound instead of the euro.

I tried some of those, they sound and feel good but the thickness and shaping are surprisingly variable within the same model. If you buy three of one type, you will have a favourite out of them.

I like the look of the Blugrass picks. I might try them in due course.
