    I’m 100% against short-sleeved shirts.
Also, probably 85% of the time, roll my shirt sleeves up.

Edit: and I also would not date a man who wore a short-sleeved shirt.
That’s a bit of a let down for me.
I make allowances for polo shirts, if it’s a deal-breaker?
I could never date a man who wore a polo shirt. They are what primary school children wear these days.

edit: T-shirt if very warm abroad, proper shirt is ok if you’re annoyed about the price of a coke

    85 cents for a coke??!?

If you're in Bermuda, that's acceptable.

    It's strange how some people exclude themselves from looking moderately stylish on the grounds of age ;
Getting older is about keeping 3 things together ,
Body ( keep trim/excercised and all parts working best they can )
Mind ( keep mentally alert/challenged and keep learning ........don't allow oneself to decay or decline )
    Spirit ( Be aware of more recent music,art ,topics,fashion ,conversation,trends,attitudes )
Nobody wants or expects an older fellow to be a fashion icon or be fooled into thinking they are 40 years younger but it doesn't hurt to be a bit more stylish or appearance conscious . Why look like a slovenly old git when there's no need and there's no good reason to appear desperately outdated in what you wear.
Attitude is important ....if you want to be generally dismissed as an outdated and irrelevant old codger thendress and think like one and be sure to mutter things like ...."in my day " or "I can't keep up with it "............be a living meme .

I've seen mentioned on here by a few people that under no circumstances would they ever wear a short sleeved shirt and would much rather roll their sleeves up.

I also noticed in the recent Mumsnet thread that was shared recently that more than one person stated that they had abandoned a date because someone showed up in a short sleeved shirt.

I was quite surprised by this as I'd never really seen this opinion shared before. I will typically switch to short sleeved shirts in summer (or t-shirts with a collar). I'm not really someone concerned with fashion and trying to look stylish so it doesn't bother me all that much, but I was wondering, what is so bad about short sleeved shirts and if this is a commonly held belief similar to socks and sandals or double denim?
Nothing is inherently wrong with a short sleeved shirt.
It depends on how you wear it.

To take two examples a loud Hawaiian shirt tucked into Dad jeans with trainers is a very different look to a plain black shirt untucked or over a t-shirt, with classic denim and boots. The former has a 'Seth Rogan wannabee still living at home with mum and dad' which is never something a prospective date will find attractive.

It also depends on what you are doing.
If you are going bowling then it is fine.
If you are dining at La Môme then perhaps a suit?

Personally, I never wear polo shirts because I dislike the 'barely business casual' association- when I worked in IT people would wear them to avoid wearing a proper shirt in the office.

'I'm not really someone concerned with fashion and trying to look stylish so it doesn't bother me all that much' is an interesting comment here.

I'm not interested in current fashion, as in wearing what it timely.
I've never read a fashion magazine and I have only a vague awareness of current trends.
But you can be interested in you appearance at least at the level of wanting to look as good as you can, as is appropriate to the situation you will be in.

I am mostly either working alone in the studio, rehearsing or gigging with my band, walking my dog or roller skating/ice skating, Occasionally I will be at dinner,
    or clubbing with friends.

Each of those scenarios require a different approach to how I am dressed.
I don't especially want to look like I am trying too hard with how I dress, and I am fairly minimal about how I engage with fashion, to the point where I refer to a lot of what I wear as 'the uniform'.
Most of the time I am wearing either a pair of dark jeans or chinos, a black t-shirt and either boots or skate shoes.

It has evolved into what it is but the idea is I don't want to spend too much time thinking about what I am wearing and I want to be able to move through my day without having to go and get changed very much. So I went for a look that is versatile in many situations without looking like I put too much thought into it, which I don't.

It is just about what is appropriate to the situation- I wouldn't wear a suit clubbing. I wouldn't dress for the rink in a motorcycle jacket and boots. I have one rule though, which is I don't dress more casually that most of the other people in a given situation and can be slightly more formal than others, but not too formal.

I have to say my most hated sartorial faux-pas is these people in expensive branded Polo shirts worn with the slightly oversize collar up and an underprinted brand name visible .....or a stupid phoney cipher like "Monterey Cup " or " St Moritz Polo " trying to look like they have just handed their imaginary polo pony to the groom or berthed the  sailing yacht .
Americans and Germans especially do this.
I always make a point of politely stopping them and saying "excuse me ....your collar is up "
    they look bemused

I once attended an awards ceremony in Central London, sharing a table with 9 other colleagues, representing our company, surrounded by our peers and competitors.

The event was black tie dress code, so I dusted off the appropriate suit, shirt and shoes, got dressed up to the nines and headed into town for a night of shenanigans with the team.

Everyone had made an effort to look their best, we all got stuck into the fizzy wine and canapés at the reception, before sitting down for the meal.

At this point, it felt like the right time to be able to remove our jackets. This is when things took a bit of a turn.

One of the invitees on our table was a bit of a ‘character’. He’d decided to design his own sleeve tattoos, with names of his family members interlinks with pretty basic line work. So, he decided to wear a short sleeve shirt with a dinner jacket!

    Not a good look.

Thankfully he’d learnt his lesson when he got married later that year!

Casual short sleeved shirts are OK.
A short sleeved work shirt with a tie is just weird.
There are certain people it might not be very wise to say this to

Wear em for work, bare below the elbow etc. I do wear casual ones when it's really hot,  prefer sleeves rolled up generally.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

I haven't been to either for about 5 years. I don't even own a suit.

In fairness I do own one expensive shirt for weddings with cufflinks etc.
