Casual short sleeved shirts are OK.
A short sleeved work shirt with a tie is just weird.
There are certain people it might not be very wise to say this to
I find having good manners quite often saves me from being shot.

I loathe 'formal' short-sleeved shirts.  They just look bloody awful to my eye.  I do have some polo shirts but they get worn abroad as semi-formal evening wear in hot weather.  I'd seldom wear one in this country although it has been known.  T-shirsts?  Fine.  But if you need to wear a shirt, it's long sleeves rolled up all the way.

I wore a polo shirt once.

    Never again.

The problem is that most short-sleeved shirts are poorly made and don't fit well. With a long-sleeved shirt you can generally get away with a sleeve length that's not perfect, but with short sleeves you can end up with a sleeve coming halfway down the forearm.

A well-made, properly fitting short- sleeved shirt is fine, if rather rare.

I cannot abide polo shirts, the collars are a mess.

Yeah, but what if I add a pocket protector?

Short-sleeved formal shirts are bit wrong but short sleeve shirts are fine in other styles
As for polo shirts, I love a lacoste one but not too fussed otherwise. That's said, I do have a cock sparred polo shirt.

Don't really have a view on short sleeved shirts - I think in most cases you should wear what you like.

However, the most incongruous mixture I've seen was on a small 8 seater floatplane, in a hot climate. The captain and co-pilot, visible from the waist up in their cockpit seats were immaculate, wearing crisp white short sleeved shirts, gold epaulettes denoting rank, aviator shades and even had captains hats.  They would not have looked out of place on the flight deck of a much larger aircraft/airline.

The image was somewhat changed when, after landing, they both got up to come and open the rear passenger door.

They both had on shabby, oil stained shorts, and scruffy flip flops.

I have a terrible habit of watching culture shock videos on YouTube - worst culture shocks of moving to Germany, culture shocks of an American in London, etc, etc. The last one I watched has two Chinese students staying in the UK (Sheffield I think). Their number one culture shock? Was it the food? The language? The buildings? Television shows? No. Men wearing shorts in winter.

When I was interested in Vitamin D deficiency for five minutes I discovered that wearing short sleeved shirts (and for this purpose also T shirts and polo shirts) is a good way to help maintain your vitamin D.

I prefer short sleeves to long sleeves in most situations and I wear shorts except in winter. I’d always rather be a bit cold than a bit hot.

I can't believe the extent of pathetic comments in this thread on what's 'acceptable' to be seen in. FFS just wear what pleases you and feels comfortable and don't give a shit what the self-appointed fashion police think.

I always thought short sleeved shirts were ok , as long as they were tucked into your underpants so people could see what brand you wear when bending over.

Bizarre premise - is this a British thing? I've never in my life heard that short-sleeved shirts were in some way goofy or naff and that rolled up sleeves looked 'cooler.' In fact, it's my impression that the alternative, the rolled up sleeves, are more of a 70s period piece. They remind me of denim jacket suits or Starsky and Hutch type dramas where passionate cops in brightly-lit sweaty offices are still searching through all the evidence at 1:00 in the morning. Dustin Hoffman in All The President's Men is a prime example of such a quintessential 70's figure where the rolled-up sleeves combine with an open top button and the tie loosened an inch or so. The rolled-up long sleeve was also famously worn by men at Butlins in the 50s and Monty Python's Gumby ensemble!  ;)

And as someone else has said, in hot climates like the one I'm in, short-sleeved shirts look cooler (temperature-wise) as well as more stylish and relaxed.
