Short sleeved shirts are Heroically Naff. The more patterned and coloured they are the worse they are - just horrible.

Polos are marginally better, but must be completely plain.

T-Shirts are fine, although are often just Free advertising for a company. Logo free is best.

Long sleeved shirts are great but should be fairly plain, with sleeves rolled up when it’s hot.

None of this is to do with Fashion, it’s about what looks good and what doesn’t.

Of course ultimately if you’re Young and in good shape you’ll be able to get away with most things, whereas if you old and out of shape you’re r going to have a tough time whatever you wear, but it all helps

In my usual mild and softly spoken way, I was about to write something about how stupid this whole thread is, clearly thought up by an insular weirdo who wouldn't recognise a warm climate if it bit him on the arse. Short sleeves are normal you style ignoramuses! Only in your weird little island with the endless cold, drizzly winters is it possible to come up with such a bizarre and impractical notion.

But I didn't because I see that @Timcito has already said it better than I could

Bizarre premise - is this a British thing? I've never in my life heard that short-sleeved shirts were in some way goofy or naff and that rolled up sleeves looked 'cooler.' In fact, it's my impression that the alternative, the rolled up sleeves, are more of a 70s period piece. They remind me of denim jacket suits or Starsky and Hutch type dramas where passionate cops in brightly-lit sweaty offices are still searching through all the evidence at 1:00 in the morning. Dustin Hoffman in All The President's Men is a prime example of such a quintessential 70's figure where the rolled-up sleeves combine with an open top button and the tie loosened an inch or so. The rolled-up long sleeve was also famously worn by men at Butlins in the 50s and Monty Python's Gumby ensemble!  ;)

And as someone else has said, in hot climates like the one I'm in, short-sleeved shirts look cooler (temperature-wise) as well as more stylish and relaxed.

PS: I wear whatever the hell I like (as does every other normal person). In my case, that's something like:

<10%  T-shirt or similar (all else aside I hate not having enough pockets!)
    30% long-sleeved shirt
    30% short-sleeved shirt
30% long-sleeved shirt with sleeves rolled up

Yes short sleeves are normal in the uk too, but doesn’t mean they look good.
Lots of flappy material with  a couple of bits of white, hairy cotton hanging down, in most cases

That's one way of describing my arms, but they're really not very hairy.

I'm loving it especially when people from the middle of nowhere have a sartorial opinion and question this funny little cold ,wet island .........I forgot they have Fashion Week ,Vogue .London  / Paris /Milan ....Europeans ?what do we know ?
I suspect the OP isn't "an insular weirdo "  and has no more than 5 fingers on each hand nor shares a surname with half the local population

A "sartorial opinion"? That's an interesting linguistic flourish!

I suppose it could be worse.  We could all be walking around with fucking corks dangling from our felt hats saying "G'day Bruce" to every 2nd person in the town while heading out to the back yard to make damper bread, barbecue a goanna, and pretend to foreigners that we know how to survive in the bush  :)

I'm picturing a lot of people here who would also happily play PRSes wearing cargo shorts outside of a hardcore or ska band...

I know it's technically considered a faux pas, but is it really?

Wearing shorts with long socks pulled right up to show off the logo is now trendy and trainer socks give young'uns the ick.

I think people should just wear whatever they want to wear and feel as comfortable as they like.

Edit: Holy cow I drafted that when there was not yet one page, opened my phone and saw I hadn't posted, hit post and there are 5 pages! Oops.

I made formal short sleeve shirts cool a long time ago so everybody can relax.

I see too many blokes with long sleeve shirts, sleeves rolled up in the summer, by which time it’s too late and your sweat patches have got out of control. You now have cooler arms but still no airflow past the rolled up material, so you are still too hot.

A nice short sleeved shirt avoids this issue and air can pass through, leaving the wearer comfortable and in good mind to make the correct decisions.

Caveat, slim fit is okay, but muscle fit is not.  If your biceps seal the sleeves you are inhibiting airflow and most importantly, look terrible and give us short sleeved shirt wearers a bad name.

Edit - hopefully notices my avatar, at a gig with a long sleeved shirt, sleeves rolled up, sweating badly no doubt …..…

Visible logos are a no in my book, Levi's red tab and arcuate excepted.
