Free recording software for windows?

What's Hot
Are there any decent ones? I want to go from line out in my amp to mic or line in on my PC so will need something with a speaker emulator?

    Take your pick.

Audacity is likely to be as near as you can get for the price. Reaper is excellent but is not free (after the 60 day trial period). Ableton Live often comes free, bundled with hardware - but the hardware is not free.

    Universal Audio Luna is free
This week's procrastination forum might be moved to sometime next week.

Reaper, tbh the only criticism it ever gets is in the "ease of use" space but tbh I find it pretty straightforward, comparable to cubase and much easier than pro tools in my opinion.

Reaper is a bargain for what you get. FWIW Boogez is a free plugin with pre loaded speaker IRs.

  • I always come back to Reaper. It just works.

  • Another Reaper user here. Does the job and not too fiddly to use once you've done a few recording projects. I've learnt a lot more about the features this year as I pretty much record every single week.

A speaker emulator is likely to be a plugin. Audacity is the standard open source option; when downloading it, ignore the bloatware (Muse Hub). I think this was in a recent thread.

  • Did you not get some 'lite' software with your interface?

He said he will be using the mic or line in on his pc, no interface.

Audacity is ok. I’ve used it for basic multitrack recording. Maybe try that then spend the small bargain amount on Reaper if you want to take it further.

  • Won't there be impedance issues with the standard inputs that come with a PC? I seem to remember trying this years ago and the sound was awful as they were quickly overloaded; it was probably just me doing something wrong though.

It seems to work OK although this has all been on the backburner for a while, I will have a proper play with it this week end.

What are your thoughts on paid for DAWs guys? I keep seeing FL Studio popping up, also Amplitube looks to be fairly good?

For recording guitar based music Reaper at 60$ is pretty hard to beat. I use Amplitube running in Reaper which works really well.

Amplitube is pretty good, although you will have to export and re-import tracks if you want to use different models at the same time. To explain, if you record one track using one model of amp, when you overdub it will use the same model of amp, and if you change the model of amp it will apply the new model to track one too.

You can get cakewalk for free at the moment. Fairly easy to use, but very few updates likely to happen.

I use Amplitube (in Logic) and I don't experience what you're describing. Are you using it in a DAW, and if so, as in insert effect on each track?

I'm talking about it's standalone version which has a multitrack recorder for getting ideas down.

Ah, sorry. I’ve never used that feature, and to be honest I forgot you could do that!

I should have clarified earlier. It's a free feature, but as I say, it's nowhere near as flexible as a real DAW, although I could be using it wrong of course. I use Cubase, which I initially got as free software with a gadget of some sort, but then upgraded to what was called 'Elements' at the time.

Me - Zoom device for recording in stereo - Audacity freeware for editing in .wav - SoundCloud for sending to family, friends and the World!!

A cheap setup apart from initial outlay on Zoom device many years ago.
