Monitors around £1000 a pair

What's Hot
Am rejigging my studio/gaming room. Currently my gaming rig and audio rig share the same screen and speakers.
Currently running Kali LP-6s.
But I will be moving the gaming rig to a different room and thinking of moving the LP6s with th gaming rig so thought it would be a good idea to upgrade.
Now I do love the sound of the LP6s, but ai have a bit more budget. Whilst there seem to be loads of reviews at the £200-£500 pound range there seems to be very few in the under £1000 range. I don't need massive speakers 8" would probably be a bit overkill in my loft room anyway.
I'm leaning towards the Genelec 8030, purely based on the fact that a lot of YouTubers seem to use them, but then again they may be just getting them for free.
Any recommendations?

  • APS Klasik 2020. I adore mine and were a lovely step up from Ns10s.

I have a pair of Hedd Type 07's which I think are pretty good, although they are more like £1500 quid now. If I had my time again, I'd probably go for Neumann KH120 II's as I think you stand a much better chance of getting them fixed in 10 years time.

I've been very happy with my Neumann KH80s.  You can get a pair for £800, which would leave you with enough for an MA1 measurement mic which would unlock the monitors DSP capabilities and allow you to optimise the setup for your room.

Yes, Genelec is probably the way I would go.
    8030's or 8020's.

How much acoustic treatment do you have in your room?
I'd put some of your budget towards that if the answer is 'none'.

    Neumann are fine too.
I've got KH80's as my 3rd set of monitors (on the modular) and if you aren't mixing for release they would be a good option.
Neumann's MA-1 Room Correction is worth checking out too. I use a different product (a Trinnov) but I've heard good things from colleagues.

The bigger the bass driver the more problems you invite if the acoustics are not sorted in the room.
You may find that Genelec or Neumann with a smaller bass driver is a better option compared to the Kali.

I trialed the ATC SCM50 and SCM45s in my room and bought the SCM45's which were 1/3rd cheaper because 2x 6.5" bass drivers sounded better than the SCM50's 9" single bass driver.

    Monitors are personal though.
Definitely buy from a place with a returns policy.

Room is pretty dead despite no sound treatment, I.e slated ceilings, big sofa.

I do have a sub as well in case it's needed. (Presonus)

I picked up the Barefoot Footprint 03's a couple of months ago to replace a pair of LP6 mk II's, and they are incredible sounding.  They are probably over your budget though.  They also come with a switch to change the characteristics of the sound and can give you flat, NS10's, Hi-Fi and Aurotone.   I mainly use mine in the flat mode, but it does let you compare sounds a bit.

The problem with a lot of cheap subs is they are low but they are not clean.
So you hear bass but it is not good to mix with.

Again, if not mixing for release does it matter?

If you are trying to mix for release then I'd probably avoid using a cheap sub.
Learn the monitors as a 2 way- engineers did this for decades and never used a subwoofer.
FWIW, I turn my sub off quite a lot and just hear the nix through the main monitors with no extra bass.

Have a look at these, they come with on-board DSP.

They do a cheaper A4V version if you need something smaller.

They're good. I sold mine at the end of last year, the new owner loves them too, and I shall be buying a new pair later in the year.

Bass is excellent, enough clarity in the mids, and the top end once you've given it a little boost is lovely. They're also very quiet in the self noise department. I loathe the hiss of some powered speakers. The Focal Alpha 65s and 50s went back because of it, the much vaunted JBL LSR305s annoyed the shit out of me. The IN-5s did not.

My only worry about the IN5 is that the smaller bass cone compared to my current LP6 (5" vs 6.5"). Maybe the Adam T7Vs may be a good substitute? A7Vs are probably a little overkill for my needs until I move in a few years time to a bigger place.

I wouldn't worry about the smaller base cone. They have plenty of bass that is delivered without being mushy and overblown. I'd recommend auditioning some in your room.

I doubt it will be an issue, I have the LP UNF and the bass is really good on those, with 4.5” drivers.  They sound fantastic, the bass is really punchy and solid.

The IN5 bass driver doesn’t even have mid range to worry about and is in a nice big cab so will sound great.

In an essentially untreated room a smaller bass driver is an advantage, not a disadvantage.
Clean bass is better than more bass.

I'd still go for the 8030's though.

I know two studio owners with Genelec 8030 monitors and both are very happy with them, so I agree with @octatonic .

  • +1 for Genelec 8030's. If you're patient enough you can pick up a pair for around £600. I have a pair of the 8030A.

The dip switches allow you to tailor them to the room you're using them in. They are built very well and are pretty flat, they have performed better than every other speaker I have tried out thats available in the same price bracket (£700-£1100).

After a lot of reading and Youtube reviews, I think I may well go for the Adam A7Vs. Probably a bit overkill at the moment, but I will be moving in two years and will likely have a much larger space to build a sound treated room where the Sound ID upload functionality will give me the extra 5% . I won't be mixing for commercial release, so I think the extra bass extension will be more pleasing to my ears for general listening. I think with the 8030 I will always feel a little underwhelmed. 8040s may be a better fit, but then the cost is so much more.
There does however seem to be a bit of a gap in the market, between budget speakers (Kali LP6/IN5s) and higher end with 6" drivers.

It is your call, but don't rush in, esp if you can't hear them first.
I am pretty confident that if you put the 8030's up against the Adams in the same room at the same time then you'd go for the Genelecs, even if they have a smaller woofer.
It isn't just about bass extension- it is about clarity, neutrality.

If you really want a 6.5" woofer, look at the Focal Shape 65.
They are not much more than the Adams but they have much better transient response in the low end, as they aren't ported, but have passive radiators.

The Adams aren't a bad speaker though, I'm sure if you do go that way you'll be happy.
