My absolutely favourite jazz fusion track from the 1980s.

Trains.. by Steps Ahead.
The peerless Michael Brecker on sax and ewi and the great Hiram Bullock on lead guitar.
I love this track beyond words.. it's timeless, just a masterpiece.
I was fortunate enough to see Hiram playing live with David Sanborn in the late 80s and he was an amazing player and showman.
So many great musicians lost to time's relentless fate :'(

    Favourite jazz fusion track.

    Surely, an oxymoron?

What a joyous piece of music. I had no idea this even existed.

I will go and check out the album.

So glad I dipped into this thread. Thanks!

I know what you mean, it does have a very similar sort of vibe. The coordinated sax and keyboards, the rubbery sounding (fretless?) bass, the pauses and percussion jabs, all quite similar, especially at the start.

It’s a nice piece, although not so sure about “timeless”, the production sounds quite dated. Far too much reverb too.

This is my favourite piece of uplifting fusion music, it always gives me a little fuzzy tingle. It’s by Passport (which is mainly Klaus Doldinger, who most famously wrote the theme for Das Boot) from their album Ocean Liner. It’s also a bit dated sounding but still lovely.

Magnetic is such an incredible album.

Michael Brecker was a phenomenal musician, arguably the finest jazz tenor saxaphone player of his generation. He championed the early electric wind instruments (EWI) and his virtuosity in that instrument is showcased on this album.

Here's another favourite of mine from this work..
It's quite a mindbender if you're not used to this sort of music.. but I love it!
All the lead synth work you hear on this track is Michael on a Steiner EWI

    Sumo..
