@bwetsI've never listened to Tool - metal isn't my thing - so thank you for bringing something new to my attention.  I didn't imagine they sounded like that! It's technically very impressive but also - to my ear - creative in the breakdown at least. It's obviously a completely different style - this guy is so totally straight - no swing, everything nailed down - almost quantised, which is amazing given what he is playing!

I know Bonham is widely regarded as one of rock's greatest - but its not stuff I listen to often so I was pleasantly surprised by his playing - lots of swing and really dragging the beat....

@Placidcasual79 you might like some of DJ Johnson's drumming (Khruangbin).

It's not often that I listen to something as much for the drumming as the other stuff, but…

    Bobby Previte with Charlie Hunter

Jerry Granelli with Bill Frisell (and Robben Ford)

Granelli was class. I love this clip of him still as good as ever as an old boy:

The original post - sorry I don't find that the least bit incredible, sounded utterly pedestrian to me but then I have never liked Reggae.

Something I did find incredible drumming-wise - I can't really look it up now but there's a guy on Youtube with a big beard and he does amazing one-handed drumming. Insane stuff!

Much as a like Toots and the Maytalls I'm struggling with isolated drum tracks as listening pleasure. But his bands always had great grooves. To some extent he invented reggae by marrying ska with James Brown, all about the groove. His daughter is doing a tribute tour soon which looks good based on the YouTube clips.
The old school rock drummers like Bonham and Bill Ward and Simon Kirke grew up listening to jazz drummers so swing and shuffle were their thing in many ways. I know very little about drumming but it hurts my ears how most rock drummers cover early Sabbath.

He's one of my all time favourite drummers. Not overly technical but incredibly musical. There's a good video around of him playing lateralus on his kit made out of his old broken cymbals.

I’ve been enjoying the playing of Avenged Sevenfold’s original drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan lately. Quite amazing that his playing on their 1st album “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet” was done in 1 take, without a click track & when he was just 18 years old.

    Some brilliant stuff in here.

It all adds to my theory that it's impossible to have a great band without a great drummer. It's absolutely essential to making people feel something

Ozrics always had fantastic drummers. Rad was my favourite but here is Balazs showing us how it's done.

So much going on here. 9/8 time if you're interested.

I think the reggae/ska drumming is interesting to me as it's so different from other drumming/genres.....even the incredibly complex and technical drumming like Tool ad Avenge Seven fold - reggae drumming - not having anything on the one, the way the kick drum is used as an embellishment rather than a crucial component of the back beat....

It's so different from everything else you learn - counter intuitive almost - not to play on the one - that it is really difficult to learn (for me anyway!) so hearing people do it well always blows me away - and the pioneers of that style really where breaking new ground......

On a more conventional front - this guy has always been a favourite -

For my money JP Glaster from Clutch is untouchable in rock drumming. Imagine is Sabbath had hired him for that last album?

here's Clutch doing some go go.

Shit, it's too long since I listened to Clutch.  I barely paid any attention to the last few albums, although I bought them all.
