What mixer are you using for solo gigs?

I have an old Behringer one that has lots of inputs for a tiny footprint, but I'm looking at something that has built in effects. I presume they're all pretty much more muchness at this level?

  • There is a noticeable jump in quality between Behringer offerings and such as Yamaha Allen and Heath and Soundcraft. I have and use both A&HZed10 and Soundcraft Signature 10. A&H sounds better than the Soundcraft, The Soundcraft  Signature has more xlr ins ( both marketed as 10 channel which is literally true) and a couple of extra feature such as channel mutes  but overall prefer the Zed10

What sort of budget are you considering and how many channels do you need?

I run a event company and we hire out little PAs for parties.  We use some little Alto mixers (identical mixers were originally marketed as Alesis) and the 8 channel one has some built in DFX.  They sound fine, so if you’re on a budget they’re worth a try.

    They’re the Alto Zephyr series.

  • Just a guitar in stereo and a vocal mic. It's the size of it that's more important than anything else as I like to travel as light as possible. That Zoom L6 looks good, but it's 300 quid and I think it might be overkill for me. The Behringer is tiny and I've been running a DD-7 into the send/return which seems to do a good enough job.

  • The Alto isn’t too big, tbf, but might be bigger than the Behringer, plus you have to get the 8ch version to get the built in FX

My Yamaha MG10XU gets taken out for small gigs… lovely sounds and SPX fx. They do a smaller one but this has nice compressors and I have options to mic a cajón or percussion or another instrument or synth.

Highly recommend Yamaha gear.. everything I’ve bought of theirs since the late 80s still going and in regular use.

i have larger A&H (digital) and Soundcraft desks for the full bands.. but they are great brands to look at too.

I don't take it out, but I've got an MG10XU at home. It's easy to use and doesn't make things sound worse than they already are (IYSWIM). One of our local mic organisers uses one to mix, and likes his, too. If you don't want the audio interface bits, the MG10FX is otherwise just the same.

  • I'm currently using a Studiomaster Club 6 xs with built in FX and compression. Great little mixer. Although I'm looking for it's slightly bigger brother as I need another channel on the odd occasion...

  • Another Yamaha MG10 user here but not for gigs for online live streams/lessons. Works perfectly well and gives me great control over my sound.
