I'm now coming up for 66 and started out as a bass player at the age of about 15 and the singular, most profound moment/ realisation I had of wanting to play bass was hearing Gary Thain's playing on Uriah Heep's 1973 live album recorded at Birmingham Town Hall. I'd never heard anyone dominate a band and stamp his style so forcefully as he did at that moment.. not until John Entwistle's playing on Quadrophenia.
He really was one of the finest rock bass players who ever lived and his early death was such a profound loss.
Here is his at his finest on Uriah's 1973 live cut of July Morning..
