As far as I can hear it just repeats the iv and i chords over and over. Not sure if it's quite in concert pitch but seems like they are B minor and F# minor.

This is another sweet home alabama where we will all disagree on which is the 1 chord.

I personally think it’s in Bm (natural minor) and the chords are F#m - Bm, so a v-i progression, repeated till the end.

But like Stuckfast says, it could also be in F#m and you’re hearing Bm - F#m progressions (iv - i).
RSD: It's going to get worse before it gets worse.

Sounds more like Fm (sometimes Fm over C  )  and Bb minor  to me ... I would say key is Bb minor

Yep you’re right. My perfect pitch has definitely slipped downwards as I’ve got older

It's interesting how we sometimes hear these things differently. For me the melody seems to resolve more on the Fm chord so I'm leaning towards that as the I chord. But I don't think it really matters; the key ambiguity ensures that there's always an element of tension throughout the song.
One day I'm going to make a guitar out of butter to experience just how well it actually plays.

  • Thank you everyone. It also doesn't help that this track was never digitally mastered and only appeared online from direct rips of the 45.

So in theory there could have been an issue with the turntable used to record the 45 to a digital file where there was a pitch variance and maybe some wow and flutter.

At about 1:50 it goes to C, which sounds to me like the V chord. Therefore I would say Fm is the I chord and Bbm the IV. Also, if you noodle over it in Fm, it sounds better than if you noodle over it in Bbm.

It's also possible they never tuned to concert pitch in the first place. And it was reasonably common practice to varispeed the master tape when cutting the record to make it a little faster, sharper and more exciting. So it's possible it was originally recorded in Em (or Am if you prefer that idea).

My old ears/fingers hear Fm and Bbm, with a C on the break...

I think it's good that even knowledgeable people here disagree as it opens the door for different uses of 'similar' chords and gives the variety that makes music so interesting.
