Studio Monitors

What's Hot
Which pair?

Don't have masses of cash, looking potentially at a pair Yamaha HS-7, or are there better monitors for the same price range out there?

Also, is it worth opting for a matched pair (didn't even know there was such a thing) or is this just a way to separate the gullible from their money?

TIA

I'm probably going to show my ignorance here but I'll be using them with Logic Pro and Helix as my audio interface.

    Is that what you meant?

Is this for fun, or do you intend to deliver release quality mixes?

Ideally both, but let's assume it's weighted heavier on the fun side of things for now.

You could look at the Kali Audio LP6 v2's.  I have a pair and they sound very good.  I did replace them with a pair of Barefoot Footprint 03's but they are really expensive.  In a smaller pair of speakers, the Adam Audio D3V or T5V are good too.

Ideally both, but let's assume it's weighted heavier on the fun side of things for now.
So I'm going to give an abbreviated version of the thing I say whenever anyone wants to mix for release.
There are a couple of dozen other posts on this topic from me here.

    1. The room you mix in is as important the the monitors you use. Spend half your monitor budget on room treatment.

    2. There isn't much under £1000 that I would personally mix on. Exceptions- Genelec 80x0 series, Dynaudio BM6a's (used)

    3. Room correction can help but doesn't replace 1.
All the monitors under £600 is roughly equivalent in terms of what it can do- there will be trade off's regardless of which way you go.

    4. Larger bass drivers are a bad idea if you don't address 1.
I would personally prefer to mix on a 4 or 5" bass driver in an untreated room and try to sort the low end with headphones than try to mix with a 7" or 8" driver.

There is more I could say on this topic- a lot more really, but I'm tight on time right now.

Oh, finally- yes, you can learn your monitors and learn to mix in any room., or learn your room and mix on any monitors etc.
That takes years and years of experience though.
To give you an idea- I've been doing it for 30 years and it is only in the last 10 or so that I feel comfortable to say I really
    know what I am doing.

So, in short, nothing in the price point of the HS7's is above and beyond better than any other option, including the HS7.
I would go for smaller bass drivers if you aren't (and I assume you won't any time soon- because almost no one really gets this bit until they actually try to mix for release) going to treat the room.

I often agree with much of what @octatonic ; says but this time I agree with it all.

Kali LP UNF are really good for small or untreated rooms.
