Ladies Nite in Buffalo solo for me. I found a video of me playing it on a guitar I wish I never got rid of.

Well played!  I always loved the Feelings quote at the end of the solo.

Thanks very much. I can’t believe it was 11 years ago, it seems like a lot more. I’m still living at home there, about to move out with my now wife. I still wear that jumper though.

I was talking to her about that guitar last week, saying I always wanted the yellow RG550 and I got it re-fretted with stainless steel as a birthday present from my parents so why on earth did I sell it? This thread reminded me of the video and again after watching it wtf was I thinking? Probably the only guitar I regret getting rid of. I didn’t like the PAF Pros I put in it but so what? Odd.

Much prefer EEAS to Skyscraper, although Hina is just wonderful.

Credit where credit it due, it's obviously no coincidence that 2 of the greatest rock guitarists produced their most satisfying work in Diamond Dave's company.

Just been listening to EEAS and I love the "ladies night" solo, awesome for the genre.

But.... Vai has never written riffs... where are the RIFFFS? I get a huge AC/DC itch listening to DLR...
On that basis EVH is just the perfect hard rock guitarist for the 80's in much the same way Jimmy Page was in the 70's. Both solo'd beautifully and made great memorable hooks.

I always liked the riff in Erotic Nightmares. I had it in my mind that there were some good ones on Sex & Religion as well, but from a quick skim maybe not.

@DefaultM Superb cover! I'd love to be at that level. You need to re-record with the volume higher though, I hate it when you can hear the plec on the strings. Yeah, great playing though!

Thanks yeah I’ve never really got the hang of this kind of thing. When I do videos it’s usually just for myself to check I can actually play it, so I stick it on front facing camera and that’s it.
However sometimes I watch them back and think I’m gonna put that on YouTube actually, then I wish I’d done the video and audio separate and synced them up. Never once have I looked in to how to do that though haha.

Said to my wife I’ve posted a video of me playing guitar and had some nice comments.
Lovely she says, you should make more videos, you’re very talented.
Oh thank you, I was using that yellow Ibanez I should never have sold.
Oh yeah you said last week.
Yeah so I’ve been looking and…
    No. You’ve got enough guitars.

    Shit.

I saw the DLR band at the old Wembley Arena (Skyscraper era) with the boxing ring in the centre of the arena, wish I'd seen the Mk1 band at Hammersmith though...grrr

I’ve talked her round! She doesn’t sound thrilled though so I’m going to have to actually sell some stuff this time.

  • I got into Vai and DLR and bit later with the Skyscraper album. At the time, it was because of Brett Tuggle the keyboardist (me being a hardcore keyboard player back then) It wasn't until I transitioned to guitar back in the early 90s that I really got into Vai's playing, discovered Eat'em and smile (an album my brother had which I avoided, didn't like the cover lol but I've played a lot, Elephant Gun being my fav.

I saw both those gigs and they were great, but the MK1 band was something else.

Vai was superb and as always, it's done with such mastery, humour and enjoyment. I seem to remember DLR playing the acoustic guitar rhythm part on VH's 'Ice Cream Man'

I read the title and wondered if he was on his way to Beckton or Lewisham.

    I remember buying that mag!

I think I finally threw out all my old Guitar Player mags a couple of years ago.
