Tascam dr-40 remote/c hack?

I have a dr-40 and my mate has just got one too. Tascam sell a remote control unit that can control rec/playback etc. That plugs into an 1/8 inch socket. 
Now, my question is. Could I somehow get one remote to control two tascams (potentially giving 8 tracks of synchronised recording.?)
The problem I foresee is that it appears to do it digitally from the limited information I've found on it.
So I don't know if just making a 1 into 2 socket would potentially work...

I don't want to buy one to find out because if it doesn't (probably won't.) Work, then I have something I have no use for.
