DAW’s / GPU’s

Had an issue with Cubase yesterday where it kept crashing due to a graphics issue.  Seems to happen when I get a few instrument plugins, but well under the headroom of CPU / Memory.

I seem to have got around it by disabling the dGPU, so the PC is just using the iGPU.

Anybody else had similar with a DAW or specifically Cubase?  Looking about online seems to be a fairly common thing.

Was looking at new laptops (mine isn’t windows 11 compatible), thinking of a dual gaming laptop / DAW,
but don’t want to invite future issues by getting something with an Nvidia GPU.  The one I was looking at recently I spotted didn’t even have an iGPU on the CPU, so glad I didn’t get that.

Pretty sure my Asus Zenbook came without a dedicated graphics chip, no problems running Win 11, and Reaper with a lot of plugins.
Doubt it would run the new Doom, but no probs with Quake, Quake2 and old Doom (Brutal ).
    YMMV, of course.

Nvidia cards and drivers are notorious for causing DPC latency issues, and Cubase seems to be particularly sensitive to them.  There are some workarounds, although I can't remember what they are - I think you set all the Nvidia Control Panel stuff to maximum performance.  This would more than likely cause clicks/pops than complete crashes though.

Which version of Cubase are you running?  Steinberg always points the finger at "dodgy plugins" but Cubase's handling of exceptions with them is very poor compared to other DAWs I've used..

Yeah some of the integrated GPU's are really good nowadays.

    Intresting.

It's Cubase Elements 12.  The cheap version but to be fair it's all I really need.
I might change to something else if I have to, I mean it's working now but only becuase I've disabled the card.  I suppuse I could switch the card on and off depending on application on a new laptop if I had to.
